Mt. Kilimanjaro is an extreme mountain environment in Tanzania. The Firstgear Men's Kilimanjaro Waterproof Jacket is a jacket designed for extreme motorcycling conditions. If you spend much time around touring and adventure motorcyclists, certain jackets tend to come up in conversation. Premium and extremely pricey jackets like those made by Aerostich are always part of the conversation. However, sooner or later some experienced rider will mention the tried and true Kilimanjaro. This is for good reason -- the jacket simply works well.

The Kilimanjaro is constructed of a Hypertex waterproof and breathable outer shell made of high density 600 denier polyester. It also includes a removable inner jacket liner. It does include CE armor in the arms and shoulders, but only a foam back pad. Many riders insert CE approved back armor as well. The jacket's cooling duties go to two 9" chest intake vents, two 8" armpit intake vents, and a 13" rear exhaust vent.

Function definitely trumps style for serious touring riders, but the latest incarnation of the Kilimanjaro line has a nice, clean look. Another aspect vital to adventure and touring riders is storage. The Kilimanjaro has a plethora of waterproof pockets both inside the shell and on the outside. Finally, the jacket has the touring rider's preferred ¾ length design for increased coverage.

The days of saddlebags being single-compartment rectangular boxes are long gone, and for the best. Firstgear's Silverstone saddlebags are a shining example of the advanced luggage systems that are now available to riders who need more than a box.

Tough 1680D nylon with 1200D polyester make up the outer shell, which is coated in PVC and protected from UV damage. This sturdy bag is heat-resistant and can tolerate a touch to the muffler, but just a touch. The sides and base are reinforced to help these bags retain their shape, and the side walls are covered with a non-abrasive, non-slip material to protect your bike.

Storage capacity won't be a concern with 1,836 cubic inches of usable space that expands to 2,484 cubic inches when you need it. If you're only going to use some of that extra space, compression straps will keep things snug. Inside and outside pockets allow you to separate your items depending on how much access you need to them. Finding your belongings, even in the main compartment, is much easier with the light gray lining.

Detachable and equipped with a soft-grip handle, these are about as convenient as they come. For safety, there is reflective piping and a reflective logo, but the light color should also aid your visibility.

As long as you are not stuck on the "classic" black bag look, these highly functional saddlebags are perfect for the needs of any rider. They take a step in moving the motorcycle luggage community past stubborn adherence to old technology, and give you a comfort that you just might grow to like.

Firstgear Scout IV Jacket | Black Leather

Despite the vast selection we have for riding jackets, I always come back to the basics: simple, black leather. The leather jacket has been around since the dawn of motorcycles, and it will persist despite advancements in textiles. No one ever buries their face in their new textile jacket to breath in the aroma of chemicals, but leather has a look, a feel, and a smell that we all know.

The leather jacket has come a long way. Firstgear's Scout IV jacket is heavy 1.3 mm to 1.4 mm leather with Kwik-Dry water resistance for all-weather riding. A full Thermoliner holds in body heat but lets out humidity, and C.E. approved armor in the elbows and shoulders offer security to the rider.

Leather gets toasty, so vents in the chest, cuffs, and back will let air flow up the arms and around the torso -- but 2-way zipper systems give you control over how much. A soft neck covering extends up the neck and chin when you need it, but will tuck away when you don't.

So, along with ample pockets, double stitching, and a 10-year warranty, this is not your great grandfather's riding jacket. The Scout IV, however, is still a classic leather in function and appearance. Technological advances have made it safer and more comfortable, but the soul of the motorcycle jacket remains the same. This is a solid buy for fit, form, and function.

Firstgear Mens Thinsulate Waterproof Gloves | Black Leather Fargo

Three words used by Firstgear in the description of their Fargo gloves confused and amazed me: waterproof, breathable leather. Leather is not known for its breathability. If you oil it, you can usually expect some water resistance, but waterproof? Really? Apparently, yes.

As the name suggests, these are for the kind of cold, drizzly weather you can find in North Dakota. These leather gloves have full gauntlets and Hipora waterproof membranes. You will have 40 grams of 3M Thinsulate insulation and an adjustable wrist strap to help your hands retain their heat.

The elastic wrist retention and gauntlet zipper will keep the wind from getting up your sleeves. When you're riding in the cold, keeping the heat you produce is vital. You've got to seal off anywhere the wind could get in, or your warmth could get out -- and the Fargo gloves are designed with that in mind.

In addition to all the internal features that make these superb inclement weather riding gloves, there are a few external features to sweeten the deal. Reflective piping across the back of the hands will help these black gloves be seen at night, which is especially helpful when using hand signals. A long faceshield wiper blade on the left index finger will let you clear your shield, rather than just smudging the water around. The wiper blade could literally be a lifesaver during night riding in the rain.

Waterproof, breathable leather -- that's all that really needs to be said.

Hooray for rain gear! I learned a lesson last year when the remnants of hurricane Gustav came north. I was on a long trip and I knew I'd be seeing some rain so I oiled up my leather and wore rain pants. Unfortunately, the rain was too much and after overcoming the oil it just seemed to soak into my coat.

So, as stated above, hooray for rain gear! Firstgear's Rainman jacket has a long waist and a high neck, so it will go over your pants and under your helmet for complete weather coverage. An adjustable belt will keep the jacket where you want it and there's an integrated rain hood in the collar if you need a bit more protection. The Rainman is composed of 70 denier nylon with a full nylon lining.

The Rainman Jacket comes in red, yellow, and gray with a reflective logo for visibility. If you want to get the whole ensemble, Firstgear also sells matching rain pants that are heat-resistant from knee to ankle, so you won't have to scrape molten nylon off of your pipes.

For about $70 you get more than just a parka. The Rainman has dual storm closure pockets to protect your wallet, phone, etc. from getting soaked. Even if it's 80 degrees, you can still get a nasty chill if you're soaked to the bone while you ride. Gear up, stay warm, and stay on the road.

Firstgear Heated Carbon Leather Riding Gloves

If Lexus could manufacture gloves, they'd come up with something like this. The analogy fits since these gloves are the top-of-the-line. And they're also not cheap.

These men's gloves are built with their own DC-heating unit, producing 15 watts of heat at 12.8 Volts per glove. But Firstgear recommends buying the separate Heat-Troller for optimal safety. And that'll run your bill up an extra 60-130 bucks depending on where you get it. Zoiks!

But they're still great gloves. They're made from grade-A drum-dyed cowhide, with a waterproof Porelle membrane underneath for ventilation. You'll also find a Thinsulate lining, pre-curved frame, and adjustable wrist closures for a really comfy fit.

And really, who wouldn't want a pair of ultra-sturdy street gloves with a little electric blanket built in to keep your fingers nice and warm?

Just like a Lexus, these gloves are an extravagant luxury item that most of us just ogle.

And if you have more than one heated accessory on your person, you'll want an electronic thermometer control so you can set the custom temperature on each one.

Firstgear Womens Babe Leather Motorcycle Jacket

Firstgear's Babe leather jacket makes a motorcycle jacket look classy. It's not your typical black leather jacket that you wear to the office, that's for sure, but it's not rough around the edges either. The Babe jacket is definitely made for riding.

It's made from premium heavyweight 1.1-1.2mm drum-dyed leather as well as Powerstretch paneling on the shoulders. The zippers are heavy-duty, made to resist a tight fit. And you'll also find smaller zippers for ventilation on the back and upper sleeves.

Armor padding is optional and not included, but there are plenty of pockets you could add protection to. You can also use these pockets to store anything else you need on the road (maps, valuables, etc.).

One last thing to observe is the Babe's fit. Notice the contouring around the high-waisted midsection. This will make the jacket feel extremely snug. So if you want a normal fit, get a size higher than you normally would. Then you'll really feel like a Babe!
