The Hornet Sonic Alarm

Motorcycle Deer Avoidance System

The Hornet Sonic Alarm Deer: the biker's worst nightmare. Every rider knows that behind every tree is a buck with a vengeance, just waiting to leap bucolically out in front of your path at the last possible moment -- and if the deer does it right, you slide 50 feet into a ravine while the deer bounces off happily unscathed.

The Hornet Deer Avoidance System for Motorcycles uses military technology from the field of high pitched, directional sonic bombardment. The Hornet's sonic generator alerts deer and other animals of your approach long before you are visible to them. Deer don't like loud or unusual noises and they will go the other way. The Hornet's proprietary wave variance tuning enables the sonic impulse to carry long distances. Unlike the "deer whistles" of old that we used to super-glue to the bottom of our frames right next to the bell, the Hornet does not rely on air flow. It is electronically powered and is effective at any speed.

The Hornet is endorsed by major insurance companies. You may even get a break on your premiums with some plans. When the wave of The Hornet is reflected from the road surface of a moving vehicle, a sonic echo effect is produced. Hornet claims that "the use of The Hornet, along with driver awareness, has been proven to reduce the risk of animal/vehicle collision by more than 70%."

The Hornet does not require grounding to the motorcycle chassis. The V series Hornets come with a 4-foot pigtail and a 3.5mm plug which connects via a new weather tight connector to a new wiring harness. It is weather-resistant, comes in black only, and is said to be easy to install. It runs about $60.

If you're looking for a radar detector as well, Whistler has a solution with their Crusader in-helmet display.
