Sidi Vertigo Mens Race Boots, Narrow Black or White | Armored Adjustable Lorica, Worn Outside or Under Pants

I have been looking for a pair boots to fit my narrowish foot. I tried the Alpinestars Web Gortex boots, but the width was just too much for me, even with inserts. After sampling many boots, the Sidi Vertigo Boots may just be the ticket.

The Vertigo is constructed of Lorica, a composite microfiber material that is tough and breathes well. Armor abounds on this boot. Externally, there are scuff guards on the outer front of the toe cup, at the ankles, the shin, the heel, and at the calf. Internally, the toe and heel are reinforced as well. One very unique design is the adjustable calf that ratchets to accommodate different rider sizes. It also adapts to be worn inside our outside the pant leg. I really like this feature.

The boot has adjustable vents on the outside of the instep area. There is also a Teflon-treated internal fabric in order to allow moisture to "breathe" out to the Lorica. This is a cool and comfortable boot.

As far as fit goes, these Sidis seem to run fairly true to size with a tendency slightly to the small side. As I mentioned before, they run quite narrow, so my wide-footed friends need not apply. Also, they are a race-oriented boot, so they are stiff; they are really not a "walk around all day" boot.

These boots are a good option for the serious sport rider. They may just be my next pair of boots.

So you've read the Spot Motorcycles product reviews of the newest motorcycling boots and you've made your choice. That's the end of the footwear story… right? Wrong! What you wear under those new boots will have a huge impact on comfort and fit. Quality socks even have an impact on safety.

REV'IT! makes a full range of quality motorcycle-specific socks. Their Tour Summer Socks are a good starting point for your sock research. One look at the makeup of the Tour Summer socks reveals a great deal of research and forethought on the part of the company. The socks are constructed of 29% microfiber, 22% polyamide, 19% merino wool, 12% robur, 11% mytlan, 5% acrylic, 2% elastane. I won't try to explain what each of those components do, but suffice it to say they add up to a comfortable, effectively moisture-wicking sock. A look at a picture of the socks reveals a highly technical design.

OK, so comfort is a good thing, but how does all this add up to safety? Comfortable feet that are not wallowing in perspiration are much more likely to do all of the tasks required -- shifting, braking, balancing, even steering. Fit is vital in socks of this nature, and there are 4 size ranges available in the Tour Summer socks. One word of warning: these are very tall socks that fit just below the knee. Some people feel restricted in such tall socks.

Knox Back & Spine Armor Protector | Fits Teknic, REV’IT CE TP2

If you have read my jacket reviews (and I certainly hope you have), you know that one of my pet peeves is that apparel makers typically don't include CE-approved back (spine) armor in new jackets. Sometimes the jackets have a cheap foam insert; other times you get an empty armor pocket. With this sad fact in mind, safety-conscious riders need to shop the aftermarket for CE-certified back armor.

I have always liked Knox armor. It has come standard in several Teknic jackets that I have owned. The TP2 CE Back Protector fits all Teknic jackets, all men's REV'IT jackets, and dozens of other applications. The incorporated technology is what Knox calls "trauma lite honeycomb" protection. It is a good design not only for protection but also for cooling. Poorly designed back protectors can be a heat blanket, but the TP2 has deep channels that help dissipate heat and moisture.

Again, it is a shame that we have to buy CE-approved armor to complete our jacket's protection. However, Knox has made a quality product here, and the price is reasonable. So if you have a cheap foam pad or an empty pocket in the back of your motorcycle jacket, take a look at the TP2. Make sure you carefully analyze the shape of the pad and the shape of your armor pocket to make sure they match.

HJC FS 15 Sport Motorcycle Helmet | Mens Black, Carbon Fiber Vented

I have owned an HJC "AC" series helmet, and was quite pleased with it. I only sold it because I changed motorcycle colors (lame reason, I know). According to HJC, the "FS" series is the replacement of that quality AC line.

The HJC FS-15 Carbon Helmet is a nice entry into that line. Carbon fiber, while not the primary player in the helmet construction, is becoming a major influence on the market. This HJC carbon helmet features a wind tunnel-tested shell shape, which is always an important element for a sportbike shell. It also boasts an advanced venting system that pulls hot, humid air out the back and away from the rider's head. HJC also claims that the helmet has a "vortex" system in the chin-bar that wicks humid air away from the shield, preventing shield fogging. Speaking of the shield, the removal mechanism is of the tool-less design that I personally prefer. Also, the shield has a closure system that pulls it very tightly to the rubber seal for a quieter ride.

Owner reviews of this helmet are amazingly positive, so it looks like HJC has another winner on its hands here. It is also very affordable by carbon fiber standards. It comes in four colors, each of which retains full view of the carbon fiber weave. Sizes run from XS-2XL.

Gaerne Waterproof Boots, Black Leather Aquatech | Motorcycle Scooter Accessories

Big names in scooter boot manufacturing come largely from Italy, these days. Gaerne's made a good name for themselves in the mid-price range. I first heard of these back in the '90s from a friend who has enough money to buy whatever he likes, but chose a pair of Gaerne over a number of far more expensive boots. For him, it was all about comfort, but he was also impressed with their durability.

The Aquatech is made for high-and-dry riding, meaning they're 100% waterproof. They use a proprietary "DryTech" membrane which sits between the leather outer and the mesh-and-wicking liner. Sweat is wicked away, and outside water is prevented from entering the boot.

A good-looking boot, they also come with a steel shank in the sole, a gear-shift pad, and titanium (and replaceable) toe sliders. The hinged ankle adds to flexibility and comfort, and the velcroed and zippered side entries make them easy to install on your feet.

The one downside to these boots seems to be: they only come in full sizes, U.S. from 6-13. I've read a few reviews from buyers who said they compensated for this by going a little smaller, or went larger and wore thick socks. If you want them bad enough…

These days, nothing is tailored to fit. You get a pair of new shoes that feel good, wear them for a day, and you end up with sore feet until you break them in --them being the shoes or the feet, take your pick. The same goes for motocross armor. It might stop those welts and scrapes from the heartless world, but you'll be plenty broken from chafing. What's worse is that every wound is right where your gear fits, and there's no escaping the pressing pain.

I would recommend custom gear to fit to every swing and sway of your body, but finding such a thing might be harder than paying for it. Enter Answer Racing's Evaporator long sleeve shirt. This shirt will be snug to the skin, protecting your from chafing and letting your armor fit over it with ease.

Spun Translink fabric is designed to wick sweat away from your skin, cooling you all the while. Antibacterial treatments also reduce the funk that builds up after working the dirt all day. Two layers work together to pull sweat off of your skin and then quickly evaporate it away. The whole process gets rid of moisture twice as fast as cotton. The cooling action stops when you stop sweating, and even helps keep you warm on those nippy mornings.

I'm a picky person. Even when I like something I can find fault with it, but Answer's Evaporator does what it's designed to do and does it for about $35.

AGV S4 Full Face Helmet | Black Carbon Vented Liner

I'm going to get right into the AGV S4 specs, because it's an impressive list.

The shell is constructed with carbon Kevlar fiber stratification and high resistance and absorption thermoplastic resins. The composite fibers keep it light but strong. To ensure this brain cage fits, the rider has the selection of two shell sizes and four internal EPS counter-shells. The right fit is important when it comes to comfort or crash.

The padding is removable and washable with hygienic treatment. Hydrofil fibers in the padding will wick moisture away from your head. The lining uses a honeycomb pattern to improve airflow from the venting system. This puts the S4 above its predecessor, the Stealth, which had poor air circulation quality due to the lining.

UV protection, anti-scratch, and anti-fog are all included. This helmet secures with the standard double D-ring, which I've heard is not true of all AGV helmets. I'm glad this one kept with what works, because I never trust the quick-release retention systems.

Now, a company could pick apart every square inch of their product and call it a feature. The price should let you know that you're not getting the best of everything. Their quick-release system for the visor, for instance, is not so quick and feels shoddy. You get the distinct impression that you're going to break it. Also, the helmet is louder than you would think from its sleek appearance.

At least none of the compromises were in shell quality. Either way, you'll look good wearing this helmet. No bits of plastic sticking up, an extended chin bar, smooth contours, and a simple but dramatic style make this a great looking full-face helmet.
