The company has taken its understanding of the foot and translated that knowledge into the demanding realm of protective motorcycling wear.

The Puma 1000 v2 Boots are a serious race-oriented boot. The technology is impressive. The aspect I like the most is what Puma calls the "Ghost Doctor" protection system that kicks in at medically defined "angles of no return". Simply put, the boot flexes and moves freely and naturally until that point at which an injury will take place. At that point, it limits movement. There is also a compact cushioning system that reduces impact in a crash.

Fit and security are also enhanced with a multi-directional fit system that cradles the foot. It has foam inserts at critical comfort areas. The fit is tight but comfortable. Most riders report that the boot fits small, so this should be considered when ordering.

Is this a walk-around touring boot? No. It is a comfortable, serious sport boot… there is a difference. However, after break-in, the Puma 1000 v2 Boots should be passably comfortable for general use. The boots come in three color combinations: black/black, black/red, and black/yellow. The boot is Euro sized from 38-46.

I see a lot to like about the latest incarnation, the Speedmaster 8.0. I guess 8.0 means that this is the 8th version -- I'm quick that way.

Anyway, here's what the glove has to offer. It has the standard drum-dyed leather construction as its base. What this glove has that some of the older Speedmasters didn't is a full compliment of armored inserts. It has injection-molded, vented knuckles. It also has molded reinforcements at the cuff (in carbon fiber) and at the fingers. Finally, it has armored plastic reinforcement in the palms. This is the only place that I have a potential gripe. The palms on these gloves may tend to get bulky. This is a conundrum on good motorcycling gloves. The palms must be protected, but often that protection can impede "feel".

I like the double cuff closure on the Speedmaster. This is a nice system. The Speedmaster gloves are available in sizes small through 2XL. Three color combinations are offered in black, blue, and red.

This is a good-looking, well-constructed sport glove from the Rocket people.

The Speed and Strength Hell 'n Back Jacket has a list of features and functions I have never seen in any other jacket. It has a body constructed of water-resistant AR-600 textile. That body has what S & S calls "Synergy System" zip-off panels. In short, you can zip off the lower 2/3 of the arms and leave just mesh and armor. This is a fantastic feature for converting the jacket for summer. Along those same lines, the jacket has a multitude of zippered vents. What if the weather is cold and wet? The Hell 'n Back has a full-sleeve waterproof liner.

Protection comes in the form of CE armor in the shoulder and sleeves and external hard armor at the shoulders. The jacket is extremely adjustable in the sleeves and body. Finally, the jacket includes a well-designed hydration system similar to the Klim Adventure Rally Jacket.

It is starting to sound like this is the ultimate do-it-all jacket for the street, dual-sport, and adventure rider, right? The problem is that there are multiple reports of failed zippers on the Hell 'n Back. I don't know if it is a result of using a water-resistant zipper design or just that S & S used cheap zippers.

Is the zipper issue enough for me not to recommend this jacket? No. It just has too many great features for that. I just wish S & S had figured out the zipper flaw before releasing the jacket. It is a supremely innovative jacket.

I am not naive. I know that we don't all wear protective apparel every time we ride, but in terms of protection, more is better.

The Alpinestars Mille Shoes are motorcycle specific shoes with some nice features. They are constructed of a 1.6 mm suede leather upper. They have a shift pad to reduce shifting pressure on the upper foot, and they have internal toe and heel reinforcement. There is a mesh inner liner for heat dissipation.

There are some protective features in this boot. As was mentioned earlier, they are constructed of good thick leather, which is an inherently rash resistive layer. Also, they have both a lace and strap closure, which is a desirable feature for keeping the boot on the foot in a crash. On the down side, there is no integrated armor at the ankle and no lateral movement ankle protection.

In the end, the Alpinestars Mille Shoes are attractive, comfortable, mildly-protective footwear. Just don't look at these as armored crash protection. They are better than wearing your tennis shoes, but fall well short of full boots. They are offered in all black with sizes ranging from 6-14.

Are they the perfect casual armored riding pants? No. Are they good? Yes. I like them; and I believe they will become my primary riding wear in the summer months.

Here are the details. The Rodeo Denims are, as the name would suggest, denim riding jeans. The denim is thick and comfortable. The jeans feature stretch panels at the inseam and an accordion stretch panel above the knee. I have sampled other protective denim jeans, and these are the most comfortable that I have found. There is a Velcro closure at the bottom of the pant leg. It's a nice feature, but the pants will still do some flapping at speed.

As for a protection, these Alpinestars have CE-approved, layered armor in the knee and shin. That's the good news. I wish Alpinestars had sewn in a Kevlar layer in the seat and thighs. That added level of protection in case of a slide would have made these, in my opinion, the ultimate in denim protection.

Do these jeans approach the level of protection of leathers? Not a chance. Are they better than riding in plain jeans? Yes, by a long shot. If you are looking for good mid-level protection, these Alpinestars are worth looking at.

What you wear under those new boots will have a huge impact on comfort and fit. Quality socks even have an impact on safety.

REV'IT! makes a full range of quality motorcycle-specific socks. Their Tour Summer Socks are a good starting point for your sock research. One look at the makeup of the Tour Summer socks reveals a great deal of research and forethought on the part of the company. The socks are constructed of 29% microfiber, 22% polyamide, 19% merino wool, 12% robur, 11% mytlan, 5% acrylic, 2% elastane. I won't try to explain what each of those components do, but suffice it to say they add up to a comfortable, effectively moisture-wicking sock. A look at a picture of the socks reveals a highly technical design.

OK, so comfort is a good thing, but how does all this add up to safety? Comfortable feet that are not wallowing in perspiration are much more likely to do all of the tasks required -- shifting, braking, balancing, even steering. Fit is vital in socks of this nature, and there are 4 size ranges available in the Tour Summer socks. One word of warning: these are very tall socks that fit just below the knee. Some people feel restricted in such tall socks.

OK, my winter rides in Arizona may not be like your winter rides in North Dakota. However, I tested these gloves at 65 miles per hour in sub-40 degree temps. The Alpinestars ST-1 Drystar Gloves kept my digits comfortable. I did not ride in wet weather, but rider reports are that they are adequately waterproof as well. Here are the details:

The gloves are constructed of 500 denier nylon outer shell, with a breathable and waterproof Drystar membrane. There is a fleece lining that is not too bulky. They have subtle and attractive embroidered logos.

Despite the "Clarino" reinforcements on palm and thumb, the protective potential of these gloves is limited by the materials. They will be better than nothing in a fall, but will not approach the protection of leather.

For me, the gloves were a more generous fit than other Alpinestars gloves I've tested. This is more than likely due to the fact that these are touring gloves rather than the race gloves I've worn before.

As a glove for cool (not bitter cold) and wet conditions, I think the Alpinestars ST-1 Drystars are a good choice. They are available in sizes small through 2XL.

Because of this, I find myself feeling comfortable ordering the Italian company's boots online with little trepidation. The Alpinestars Web Gore-Tex Boots are a bit of a different fit, however.

The boots are what I look for in motorcycle footwear. They are well-made, comfortable, waterproof, and breathable (thanks to Gore-Tex). They are also adequately protective for the average street rider. That protection comes in the form of well-placed injection-molded plastic in critical areas. That plastic is internal rather than external, so the boot has a styling that is less "comic book hero" than most race boots.

Other styling cues are similarly subtle. The Alpinestars logos are present (as they should be) but are not overstated. Toe shift durability is aided by injected plastic. Comfort is enhanced by a soft micro-fiber instep flex zone and a removable anatomic perforated foot bed. The boots are easy to get on and off thanks to a generous zippered and Velcroed side entry.

In all, these are great boots. However, if (like me) you are accustomed to a "typical" Alpinestars fit, you may find yourself swimming in this model. The Web boot has a very generous girth. For me, this boot fits very wide. Take this into consideration when ordering.

However, they can be downright uncomfortable in hot weather. I have worn Fieldsheer gloves of the leather variety and was very impressed. With this in mind, I had high hopes for the Fieldsheer Ti Air 2.0 Mesh Gloves. My hope was for a substantial glove with a mesh back for cooling.

Well, the reality is that the glove seems well-made, but it is less than confidence-inspiring in terms of protection. The Ti Air 2.0 seems to be a glorified dirt glove. Street gloves must offer protection well beyond that of a dirt glove because of the potential ravages of taking a slide along the pavement. I just do not trust these gloves for that purpose.

To be honest, I may have been expecting too much. Nowhere does Fieldsheer make any protection claims. Rather, the Ti 2 is billed as a comfortable glove which provides a solid grip on the bars. These claims are true. So in the end, the Fieldsheer Ti Air 2.0 Mesh Gloves are probably right on target for their intended mission. I just feel that mission pulls up a little short for a street glove.

Textile looks more casual than its leather counterpart. In many ways, it is also more comfortable. Dainese's new Drake Air textile pants are a nice addition to the choices in this motorcycle apparel realm.

The Drake Air model has an impressive list of comfort and fitment features, but also a notable lack of hip and seat armor. The pants are constructed of a heavyweight 750 Cordura. They also feature both a perforated fabric and vents that can be opened and closed to suit various thermal needs. On the lower leg there are calf zippers, and the waist is adjustable.

Armor is of the composite variety and is located on the knee and shin area. Just like in the Alpinestars Rodeo jeans, there is no armor in the hip and seat. I view this as a shortcoming of both pairs. I know armor in those areas would make the textile pants more bulky, but also substantially more protective.

The Dainese New Drake Air Textile pants are available in European sizes 44-60. Riders report that the pants run on the short side, so consider that when ordering. I think that these pants are a good option for summer riding.
