There is one big challenge to this kind of touring -- where to stow the necessities for an extended trip. Our sportbikes don't have saddlebags and hard luggage like touring bikes. Thus, tank bags are our primary means of taking our stuff with us. Tank bags come in two basic forms: strap-on and magnetic. The Joe Rocket Manta XL Tank Bag is a quality piece of luggage of the magnetic variety.

The Manta is constructed of wind and water resistant Rock Tex 680. It measures 14"L x 7.5"W x 10"H, which is a good fit for most sportbike tanks. It has a large main compartment and a top cell phone pocket, which is a truly convenient feature. It also includes a shoulder strap for off-the-bike transport and a hidden rain cover.

One thing to make sure of before ordering is that you have a metal tank on your bike. If yours is fiberglass or plastic, the magnets obviously won't work. Joe Rocket is a quality company and you'll get years of service out of this tank bag.

I've put off using a tank bag because I really like my paint job, but I don't like it more than my independence.

Chase Harper's 450 magnetic tank bag is probably as much as I need. I'm going to say right off that the price is on the high side for the capacity, but Chase Harper makes some quality bags which are worth the expense if you have a habit of abusing your equipment. Still, at 12 inches long, 9 inches wide, and only 3 inches high, you might be able to get more space for around $80 elsewhere. If the price doesn't throw you, I want your life, and you should read on for the specs.

Constructed of 1000-denier DuPont Cordura, the tapering design makes it perfect for most cruiser tanks. Being 12 inches long, you should be able to figure out if it'll fit a sport tank if that's what you have. Industrial-grade magnets tucked in the wings will hold this bag to your tank with bulldog tenacity and won't scratch your finish. In addition to the main compartment, there are some top pockets for keys and whatnot and a bungee-covered external mesh pocket with reversible map pouch. A rubberized handle makes carry-off comfortable.

A bit of extra storage can't hurt. It might even free you from 4-wheeled favors.

This might make sense for the shape of the gas tank, but it makes little sense for a lot of the things I want and need to carry on my bike. First aid kits, laptops, camera cases, and boxes of donuts to keep in good with the boss-man; these are all square, and I'd rather not spend a lot of time trying to cram a square peg into a round hole.

Chase Harper's 1150 tank bag takes a new angle on angles. Their bag measures easily at 14.5 inches by 10 inches by 4 inches. This is an expandable bag that increases the 4-inch hight to 10.5 inches, and a lot can be stacked into this rectangular pillar.

Constructed of 1000 denier Cordura nylon and equipped with a neoprene tank pad, you won't have to worry about the magnetic base scratching your tank. The base of the bag has a removable foam insert that can be used to prevent tools from rattling around. In addition to the main box compartment, there is an external pouch for change or whatnot. There is also a nice, big, rectangular map pouch for your printed map.

The unique shape makes this an ideal bag for students and business people who need to transport books, computers, and paperwork. Internal compression straps prevent sliding and shifting, and the sewn-in zipper hinges allow easy access. These are also stackable with other Chase Harper bags if you need more space. The drawback to stacking this bag, or even having it fully expanded, is that you are adding a lot of height to the tank in front of you, and that could get cumbersome pretty quickly.

More weight on the front tire, greater fuel capacity, and a tighter riding position are all consequences of the design. Unfortunately, most tank bags don't share this contemporary styling.

Chase Harper's 650 Sportbike tank bag has been designed for those beetle-like tanks. A small, curved base will perch atop the apex of the tank. The 650 comes with the option of a magnetic or strap mounting system. Either method will create a secure hold and release easily for carrying away with the rubberized handle or hide-away backpack straps.

A reversible map pouch is large enough to see two folds of your AAA map or nearly an entire sheet of printed paper. Mesh pockets on the top and sides provide a visible place to put small items. If you are like me and always second guess whether or not you packed your phone charger, you could stow it under the mesh for constant reassurance. The main compartment is large enough to carry your hydration pack and some extra gear. The whole thing gives you 9.5 liters of storage space.

The largest bonus, as with a lot of Chase Harper's gear, is the stitching. The 1,000 denier Cordura is sewn with internally bound seams that are bar-tacked at stress points. The shape of this bag is a little odd, in that it has straight walls on the sides. That means it sits 5 inches straight up. I suppose they were trying to maximize the capacity while maintaining a small footprint.

Chase Harper to the rescue. The Manta X2 is a small tank bag with 3.3 liters of storage room for the bare essentials. Dubbed the Manta for its magnetic wings, this bag hugs your tank like a sticky sea creature, but will keep all of your stuff dry with waterproof zippers.

Constructed of 100 denier Cordura Plus, the Manta is a tough little bag. The front compartment, just big enough from your cell phone and keys, is water-tight and easy to access quickly. The larger compartment will hold longer objects, such as a bottle of water and a spare pair of gloves.

All zippers are double stitched, and all seams are internally bound with bar-tacked stress points. The magnetic flaps tuck away for easy carry with the removable shoulder strap.

Now, if this cost $30, I would say it's a great little bag for the pocketless, but it runs closer to $70. For that price, you could get a tank bag with more than twice the capacity and features. I don't think I would spend this much to carry around a bottle of water and a wallet. I'll shove them in my coat and take my weird, lumpy chances.

I wouldn't say they are optimal for a week long trip, unless you're spartan about it, but these are freeing bikes of saddlebags and freeing riders of backpacks.

Bags like Alpinestars' Tech Aero stand as examples of why riders like these so much. Packing a lot into a small frame, the Aero is designed to stow everything from your socks to you laptop. The laptop sleeve on a tank bag is not unheard of, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it common either.

The Aero is an expandable bag and offers 20 liters of space at a minimum and 30 liters fully expanded. Side pockets and internal organizer pockets will let everything have a place, including your sunglasses which will find a fleece-lined pouch that is water resistant. Riders say the zippers do a good job of holding off the elements, despite Alpinestars' reluctance to claim this as a feature.

All the perks, like a clear map pocket and a removable magnetic base, are included. The Aero has straps to double as a backpack, making it superior to most other varieties of riding luggage. This is a great bag if you ride to the office or school, or if everything you own fits in a shoebox already.

Like a good deal of the gear from Alpinestars, the price is higher than I would like to see, especially for a tank bag. With the growing popularity of tank bags, there is far too much competition to risk a hefty price tag. The quality, however, does shine through, and there is an impressive combination of features. A case of relative value, each rider must decide where the balance of cost and quality comes to rest.

A neoprene pad prevents scratching while the strong magnets and handlebar strap keep it in place. The Urban tank bag stays where you put it, even under heavy vibration and high winds, but it still comes off easily when you want to leave the bike. When you do walk away from your machine, you can carry your helmet with you in a protective, neoprene sling.

Like any good bag, the Urban tank bag is water resistant, and it is constructed of sturdy ripstop material. There are plenty of pockets and a clear map pouch for anything at which the rider may need to glance. This is absolutely perfect if you're a student, and not a bad buy for anyone who commutes on their bike.

The only complaint I could muster about this bag was the offset position of the Icon logo (it makes me think the bag is sitting askew), so you'll know that this is a top of the line purchase. You can select from blue, yellow, gray, red, pink, or black.

Like so many things, it's what's inside that counts, and you will be able to put all of your small essentials in Icon's Primer bag. If you can't get them all in there, you pack too much crap. Internal divider pockets will help you stay organized, and a compression strap will hold it all securely.

The Primer comes in red, blue, pink, gray, and black. Here's the clincher: it's $50. Icon's Primer tank bag with backpack straps is $50. You can't argue with that.
