I know adventure riders who actually seek out these extremes -- preferably in the same day! Obviously, riders with this mindset seek out gear with the ability to adapt to this full palette of environmental offerings.

The REV'IT! Sand Jacket is right down the adventure rider's alley. The Sand is the newest evolution of the very popular Off Track jacket. OK, I always liked the nuances of the "Off Track" name, but the Sand appears to be an improvement on an already great jacket.

The Sand is a very technical jacket that has a full compliment of inserts, liners, and membranes that layer in various configurations to provide the right protection in an extreme range of conditions. Venting is ample in the chest, underarms, and back. The outer shell is a combination of three different weights of textile. Adjustability is extreme as well. There are adjusters at the arms, underarms, waist, and hips. A plethora of pockets rounds out the Sand jacket.

Protection is offered in the form of CE-approved armor in the shoulders and arms. Sadly, no back armor comes in the package. This is the only downside I see in this jacket. The Sand is offered in 4 color combinations and sizes small through 4XL.

However, in these tough times, finding a company that continually produces quality protective wear at an affordable price is nice. Olympia is just such a company. I have found Olympia gear to be affordable, not cheap -- and that's the key.

The Olympia Airglide 2 Jacket has a feature list that transcends its price point. The jacket's 500 denier DuPont Cordura shell includes ballistic airflow mesh panels for incredible airflow. It includes adjusters at the collar, cuffs, elbows, and waist. For wet weather, it includes a thermal waterproof liner.

OK, so it's a versatile jacket, but what about protection? There are some pleasant surprises here. Yes, the jacket includes the industry standard CE-approved armor at the impact points of the arms and shoulders. However, CE-approved armor is also included in the back in the form of a "Motion Flex" articulated back protector. CE back armor is an "option" in much more expensive jackets. Obviously, Olympia has not cut corners on this jacket.

The Airglide is offered in 5 color combinations including a popular high-visibility neon yellow. Available sizes are small through 4XL. A quality jacket at a reasonable price -- can you beat that?

The Teknic Women's Diamond Jacket offers a good measure of protection while still looking good off the bike.

Let's start, as we should, with protection. The Teknic Diamond features Knox Lite CE-certified armor. I am a fan of Knox armor, as I have had it in several personal jackets. The Knox armor is fitted in pockets in the shoulder and forearm areas. In the back, there is what Teknic calls an Armorshield pad. I am not as familiar with this armor. It looks more substantial that the typical foam back insert, but it still comes up short of CE armor. The jacket's shell is a solid 600D Cordura.

Now I am no fashion god (as my wife will attest), but I like the way this jacket looks. It has a good feminine cut and an artistic logo on the left chest and right upper arm areas. It also has some pretty cool antique gold buckle adjusters at the waist. The jacket includes a waterproof, breathable liner system and a quilted taffeta full-sleeve removable liner.

I think venting would be my only question on this jacket. It has two underarm vents and a rear exhaust vent. I think the lack of intake venting, combined with the predominant black color, would make this jacket a bit steamy in extreme heat or humidity.

First off, this jacket is perforated for breathability and airflow with its liner removed. Perforated leather is the best protection you can get and still stay cool. Also included is a removable thermal microdown lining for the cooler temperatures. The Santa Monica incorporates an aerodynamic hump in the upper back.

For protection, the Santa Monica features good low profile armor in the shoulders and arms. However, one of my pet peeves is premium apparel that does not include CE-approved armor in the back, and that includes this jacket. One really nice feature this jacket has is anti-grip titanium protectors on the shoulders that are inspired by the ones worn by MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi. He is, after all, sponsored by Dainese.

The Dainese Santa Monica Perforated Leather Jacket is another nice, premium jacket offered up by the Italian company. Riders report that the sizing is accurate, but you'll have to convert the Euro size to US sizing. It is offered in Euro sizes 44 - 60.

This is primarily a hot weather jacket, but it is made more versatile with a removable 100% waterproof liner.

The Moment of Truth is offered in four color combinations: black, black and silver, black and red, and black and blue. Sizes range from small to 3XL. If you are looking for a summer jacket that has nice styling and solid features, this jacket is worth serious consideration.

Aside from a name that will inspire an occasional, good-natured verbal jab from riding buddies, I have found Joe Rocket gear to be well-made and functional.

On the other hand, when I think helmets, Shoei, Arai, Suomy, and AGV come to mind -- not necessarily Joe Rocket. However, the Rocketeers are making some innovative headgear. The RKT101 Carbon Fiber Full Face Helmet is a good example. It is a Snell and DOT certified helmet that has an extremely low weight of less than 1450 grams. As name indicates, the shell is constructed of carbon fiber, which is shown in a translucent finish. After all, if you are wearing carbon fiber, others might as well know it! The helmet has well-designed venting and a removable and washable inner lining. The shield mechanism is of the quickly removable design similar to that found on Shoeis.

No, Joe Rocket is not the first company to come to mind when thinking helmets, and carbon fiber is not the most common helmet material. However, this is a quality helmet that is getting very positive reviews from riders. The RKT101 Carbon Fiber helmet is worth a look. After all, wearing a brand named Joe Rocket can only make you faster!

I've looked at modulars, convertibles, and crossovers. Marketing lingo aside, the basic concept is to offer a helmet that adapts to different riding conditions and different riding styles. To be honest, I have had mixed reactions to each of these helmets.

The Nexx X30 Viper also inspires a kind of perplexed ambivalence. Yes, it's innovative. In fact, it has one feature that interests me more than the other modular helmets I've reviewed -- we'll get to that when we talk safety later. Comfort-wise, the Viper is getting good reviews from daily users. If you have a round head shape, this helmet seems to be a good fit (like the Arai round shell shapes). The interior is removable and washable -- a feature that every modern helmet should have. One interesting innovation is that the interior padding is adjustable. Like some other convertible helmets, the X30 incorporates an internal moveable tinted visor.

Now on to safety. The shell is an advanced thermo resin with a flip-up face. Here is where things get interesting. Unlike other modular designs, when the face is in the open position, a unique chin-bar remains. This is a great feature and has allowed the helmet to achieve both ECE 22.05 and DOT certification. It is rated as a full-face helmet because of that feature. I like this technology a lot.

Styling of the X30? Personally, it is really not my cup of tea. The side and rear views are fine; face-on, this thing looks like it belongs on a Power Ranger. I just don't have the superpowers to pull that look off. However, I think the chin-bar advancement in the X30 makes it a big step forward in helmet technology.

The Tour Master Transition Series 2 jacket is well equipped to make the transition from warm, to cold, to wet riding conditions.

This three-quarter length touring jacket has a 600 denier shell and a warming 100-gram Polyfill removable insulated liner for cold riding conditions. If the conditions turn wet, the waterproof and breathable Rainguard barrier allows dryness without perspiration buildup. When the summer season rears its lovely head, the jacket's innovative venting comes into play. The Transition boasts zippered 3-position shoulder vents in addition to chest vents, sleeve vents, and rear exit vents. Tour Master calls their venting system the Pipeline Ventilation System. Maybe it carries oil, too!

All touring riders love storage, and the Transition does not disappoint. It offers zippered chest map pockets, zippered hand pockets with flap closure, an internal media pocket, a dual zippered fanny pack, and a sleeve key pocket.

This jacket is offered in six color combinations and a staggering array of sizes. In regular men's sizes, it runs from extra small to 4XL. It is also offered in tall sizes as well as ladies' sizes small through extra large. You would be hard pressed to find someone who could not find the right size or color.

This new Shark Evoline Absolute Helmet is certainly that. It's hard to know where to start. I guess it makes sense to start with the helmet's most striking feature: the patented Tech-Move System Chinstrap. The chin bar unlocks, moves to a back position, and integrates with the lines of the shell. Such an "outside the box" design is sure to inspire strong reactions both pro and con. However, most initial rider comments are positive, so it seems Shark has done something right here.

With such a innovative chin bar, it's easy to overlook the helmet's other features. The shell is constructed of an injected thermoplastic resin. Venting comes in the form of integrated channels, and the interior padding is removable and washable.

The helmet does not carry Snell certification, but it meets or exceeds D.O.T. and ECE 22-05 standards. It is warranted for 5 years, which is reassuring. The helmet comes in sizes extra small through extra large.

I am a traditionalist, so I'm not sure what to think about the new Shark Evoline Absolute helmet. If it proves to hold up to use, and more importantly to crashes, this may be a design of the future. Shark is an up-and-coming manufacturer, and they are certainly testing the new technology market.
