I just got back from a 500-mile ride in the upper Baja of Mexico wearing the Alpinestars Rodeo Denim jeans. Are they the perfect casual armored riding pants? No. Are they good? Yes. I like them; and I believe they will become my primary riding wear in the summer months.

Here are the details. The Rodeo Denims are, as the name would suggest, denim riding jeans. The denim is thick and comfortable. The jeans feature stretch panels at the inseam and an accordion stretch panel above the knee. I have sampled other protective denim jeans, and these are the most comfortable that I have found. There is a Velcro closure at the bottom of the pant leg. It's a nice feature, but the pants will still do some flapping at speed.

As for a protection, these Alpinestars have CE-approved, layered armor in the knee and shin. That's the good news. I wish Alpinestars had sewn in a Kevlar layer in the seat and thighs. That added level of protection in case of a slide would have made these, in my opinion, the ultimate in denim protection.

Do these jeans approach the level of protection of leathers? Not a chance. Are they better than riding in plain jeans? Yes, by a long shot. If you are looking for good mid-level protection, these Alpinestars are worth looking at.

Motorcycle Denim Racing Pants, Zip Off Blue | Thor MX Nylon Static Shorts

I began my motorcycle riding obsession over three decades ago on dirt bikes. To this day, I still ride in the dirt, and I still love it. However, there is one thing that has always stuck in my craw -- the overly trendy and gaudy nature of off-road riding apparel. Enter the Thor Motocross Static Pants. Can a pair of riding pants be all things to all riders? It seems that these pants can.

The cut is of the over-the-boot style (which I prefer). When the ride is over, you can simply zip off the lower pant-legs and you have a pair of shorts. That's a nice feature for cooling down after a long dirt ride. The pants offer other nice touches like a cordura nylon seat panel, double and triple needle stitching, and ballistic nylon inner leg panels for heat resistance.

So what was that about all things to all riders? Just take a look at the color and logo options. The pants come in understated, monochromatic themes for a boring guy like me. However, for you flashier types, the pants are also offered in a kind of star-studded camo motif as well as a wild paisley print. These are nice pants with a load of nice features.

I've always worn a leather jacket with armor, but it isn't the most comfortable item in my closet. If everyone around you is ranting and raving about the leathers, but you're just not interested in cow hide, Tourmaster offers their Range denim jacket made for bikers.

In appearance the Range looks like a sturdy, denim jacket -- which it is -- but removable CE-approved armor protecting your shoulders and elbows make it ride-ready. Triple density, articulated back protection adds to the clandestine features of the Range jacket. A fleece liner will keep you warm on the cool days; zippered vents in the sleeves, chest, and back will keep you cool on the warm days. The sleeve vents have 3 positions to give the rider control over how much airflow they want.

Custom tailoring is no longer common, so Tourmaster made their jacket with adjustable sleeves and waist for a perfect fit. The 13.5-oz. denim makes the Range durable and abrasion resistant. Like any good jacket, it has a plethora of pockets, and if you're still not getting enough ventilation, the pockets function as extra vents.

You don't need to choose between leather and synthetic with a denim jacket like the Range. I'm hard pressed to leave my leather behind, but if anything is going to tempt me away, it will be this bit of apparel. There is a casual association with denim that cannot be dismissed, and this jacket embraces the relaxed style that is unmatched by serious leathers or technical synthetics without leaving the rider devoid of protection.

Personal protection equipment has its limits where the cumbersome nature begins to reduce its effectiveness. I have short legs, and every layer you add to those stems makes me that much less mobile. I'm a fan of protection, but since I commute on my bike I don't want to be wearing leather pants or textile riding pants that are waist-to-ankle armor. These women's jeans, designed for riding, fit the bill -- and they're made by Icon to boot.

High-density 14-ounce denim offers ample abrasion protection over off-the-shelf, daily-wear jeans. The knees of Icon's jeans have been reinforced with an additional layer of denim to provide some impact resistance and a lot of abrasion defense. The seams are Kevlar stitching, so what would otherwise be the weakest point of your jeans just became the strongest.

The big bonus here is that these are regular jeans. They're reinforced for riding, but they wear, look, and cost the same as any pair of jeans. When you pick these up, they're going to feel heavy due to the density of the material, but you won't notice than when you're wearing them.

The sizing is odd. You should find a place that you can try these on or order them from a distributor that won't charge you an arm and a leg for exchanges. These are a straight leg jean, and Icon didn't go crazy trying to fit the latest fashion so there are no weird cuts or embellishments. Simple and casual, these are just what a rider wants in a pair of jeans and so much more.
