It's not so much that you can't strap them to the tail, or toss them in your soft bags, but that you'll probably end up with destruction or a terrible mess. Hard packs don't make it much easier to carry things, but they can protect the things you do carry. Think of them like bugs. Bugs got their hard shells at the sacrifice of a lot of convenience, but it's worth it when they need it.

Axio's Fuse has a solid architecture lined and covered by a layer of nylon. The internal laptop compartment is fleece-lined for extra electronic comfort. There is padding on the back and the straps and a mesh panel to prevent that gross sweat patch that can accumulate on your back.

Employing Axio's dual zone, 4-panel organization system, you will have lots of options for packing your crushables. Black chrome zipper pulls and high contrast stitching give the Fuse a sharp look with dedication of design. A rigid exterior maintains the modern lines, and the polyurethane shell is surprisingly light for what it is, at around 4.5 pounds. The dimensions are 18.5 inches high, 13.5 inches wide, and 9 inches deep. It's certainly big enough for those eggs.

Like the bug, there are sacrifices to be made. This bag won't fold up and stow away when you get to work/class/the store. Even empty, it's going to be kind of a big thing that you have to put somewhere if you want to remove it. All hard bags can be inconvenient, and this one is rather expensive, at about $160. Your precious electronics, or that important document, however, will be safe as houses.

This might make sense for the shape of the gas tank, but it makes little sense for a lot of the things I want and need to carry on my bike. First aid kits, laptops, camera cases, and boxes of donuts to keep in good with the boss-man; these are all square, and I'd rather not spend a lot of time trying to cram a square peg into a round hole.

Chase Harper's 1150 tank bag takes a new angle on angles. Their bag measures easily at 14.5 inches by 10 inches by 4 inches. This is an expandable bag that increases the 4-inch hight to 10.5 inches, and a lot can be stacked into this rectangular pillar.

Constructed of 1000 denier Cordura nylon and equipped with a neoprene tank pad, you won't have to worry about the magnetic base scratching your tank. The base of the bag has a removable foam insert that can be used to prevent tools from rattling around. In addition to the main box compartment, there is an external pouch for change or whatnot. There is also a nice, big, rectangular map pouch for your printed map.

The unique shape makes this an ideal bag for students and business people who need to transport books, computers, and paperwork. Internal compression straps prevent sliding and shifting, and the sewn-in zipper hinges allow easy access. These are also stackable with other Chase Harper bags if you need more space. The drawback to stacking this bag, or even having it fully expanded, is that you are adding a lot of height to the tank in front of you, and that could get cumbersome pretty quickly.

I'm not saying I'd rather one over the other. Frankly, I find the whole scenario distasteful, but a rigid shell can do as much to protect your electronics as rigid armor can protect your bones.

Multiple compartments in the Axio Swift 2.0 hardpack give everything a snug home as you ride. A laptop, notebooks, pens, books, a camera, and more can fit in the 1,800 cubic inches of storage space. There is even a semi-concealed pocket for sensitive items like passports and billfolds.

Constructed of polycarbonate, the shell is aerodynamically designed. You won't feel a drag when you lean in to zip past that RV on the freeway. The shoulder straps are padded and contain a cell phone pouch for easy access. Mesh panels and a rigid channel on the back allow air to circulate and prevent that disgusting sweaty back feeling.

The look is futuristic fun, and 5 color selections let you exercise your personal preferences, but the Axio Swift 2.0 suffers for the safety it provides your possessions. Like all hard bags, it becomes inconvenient as soon as you remove it. You cannot set it on its end and rifle through it, because it will not stay upright. If you're in class or a meeting and you move it or lay it down quickly, it will make quite a clatter.

A lack of convenience is the price you pay for excellent protection. If you've ever had someone stack something heavy on your pack and found the broken remains of something you loved, you'll benefit from a hard bag -- and the Swift is one of the better ones.

I wouldn't say they are optimal for a week long trip, unless you're spartan about it, but these are freeing bikes of saddlebags and freeing riders of backpacks.

Bags like Alpinestars' Tech Aero stand as examples of why riders like these so much. Packing a lot into a small frame, the Aero is designed to stow everything from your socks to you laptop. The laptop sleeve on a tank bag is not unheard of, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it common either.

The Aero is an expandable bag and offers 20 liters of space at a minimum and 30 liters fully expanded. Side pockets and internal organizer pockets will let everything have a place, including your sunglasses which will find a fleece-lined pouch that is water resistant. Riders say the zippers do a good job of holding off the elements, despite Alpinestars' reluctance to claim this as a feature.

All the perks, like a clear map pocket and a removable magnetic base, are included. The Aero has straps to double as a backpack, making it superior to most other varieties of riding luggage. This is a great bag if you ride to the office or school, or if everything you own fits in a shoebox already.

Like a good deal of the gear from Alpinestars, the price is higher than I would like to see, especially for a tank bag. With the growing popularity of tank bags, there is far too much competition to risk a hefty price tag. The quality, however, does shine through, and there is an impressive combination of features. A case of relative value, each rider must decide where the balance of cost and quality comes to rest.

While I'm sure I would change my mind when lying bleeding on the pavement, I'm of the current opinion that a broken leg would be less of an inconvenience than a broken computer.

Rapid Transit's Shrapnel backpack is made for two things: carrying a laptop and carrying it on a bike. The Shrapnel is resistant to wind and water and comes with a rain cover -- because computers and moisture do not generally get along.

Padding in the back and shoulder straps offers comfort to the rider, regardless of the bulk of your jacket. There is storage designed for audio systems with headphone jack access as well as storage designed to protect eyewear. Electronics don't take kindly to vibration, so chest and waist compression straps turn your body into a big, squishy shock absorber.

The Shrapnel is 20.1 inches by 11.8 inches by 7.9 inches, providing 1,874 cubic inches of storage space strapped to your back. You can have faith that, if your laptop meets an unfortunate end, it's likely you've bigger problems with which to contend. Strong, strapped, and a product of (and for) the technology of the 21st century, this is an indispensable accessory for the wired-in biker. I find the name "Shrapnel" to be poorly chosen, but consider that it prevents your computer from becoming just that.

For additional safety, consider a hardpack like this one from Axio.

Nothing says utility like a bunch of riveted straps. The Icon 2.0 Backpack by Oakley is one pack that looks as tough as it actually is with variable material paneling and feature-packed portability.

For comfort, the handle is molded rubber. When you have over 3,000 cubic inches of storage space, your pack might get a bit on the heavy side and you'll need that rubber handle. If you're going for the long haul, contoured shoulder straps with poly-wick lining and an adjustable sternum strap will keep you comfortable and reduce pressure spots. Injection-molded PVC provides some rigidity to distribute weight more effectively.

Wearing a pack while riding means that your body is acting as a shock absorber, and you'll feel a poorly fitted pack after about 20 miles. Even if you don't have any points that rub, if the weight is not distributed you'll learn a quick lesson about some back muscles you never knew you had.

Pockets and pouches aplenty give you more than enough room for a weekend trip. A dedicated laptop compartment prevents you from wrapping your computer in an old sweatshirt, and the exterior webbed pockets will give you quick access to snacks or anything else you need on the road.

This is one of the best looking, most robust backpacks I've seen on the market. Unfortunately, you'll be paying for every scrap of comfort and functionality, but if you've ever worn a fully-loaded cheap pack, you'll know that it's well worth the cost.

They have some beautiful, well-made bits that I desperately want to bolt to my bike, but then I see their logo on everything from mud flaps to minivans. I respect a company that puts out great products, but they tend to plaster their name around town like an insecure real estate agent on so many park benches.

I suppose that's why I find myself so fond of their Sissy Bar Backpack. It's never going to be a Harley icon, but they saw a need and were ready to fill it. Not just for students, the Sissy Bar Backpack gives any rider a place to keep whatever they own that will fit in 1,600 cubic inches. It's easy to take off the bike and is as convenient and comfortable as any other backpack.

However, you can rest assured that this is not, despite its appearance, just any other backpack. It is made to strap to the passenger backrest and has plenty of internal padding to protect a laptop. This backpack comes with a rain cover, because you can't give up the commute just because there's a little precipitation.

High quality backpacks are not cheap, and this is a Harley pack so it's certainly no exception. The simple color scheme and nearly generic backpack look, however, will never go out of style. So long as you treat it well, you can have this handy pack for a very long time.
