I am all for new technology, but the Vemar CKQI Bluetooth Helmet is a real departure. So what is it? Let me try to explain.

As the name suggests, this helmet incorporates a Bluetooth intercom and communications system. I will admit this is a technology that I know little about. However, those "in the know" say the CKQI system works much more seamlessly than many other similar helmet communication systems.

Now on to the stuff that I do know: helmet design. The CKQI has a molded thermoplastic shell, and is of a convertible design. With the chin-bar installed, it's a full face helmet. With it removed, it is obviously an open face lid. We've seen helmets with this feature before. The most striking element to me is the bug-eyed shield design. For my tastes, this is the stylistic downfall of the Vemar CKQI Bluetooth Helmet. However, style is in the eye of the beholder, so it may be that my tastes are just too traditional.

For obvious reasons, the venting system is only a factor when the helmet is used in the full face mode. The airflow duties are accomplished by a single central intake and multiple rear exhaust vents.

The Vemar CKQI Bluetooth Helmet does come in multiple colors; however, you'll look most like an Imperial Stormtrooper from Star Wars if you buy the white!

The helmet has secured DOT and EC safety certification.

However, I do often ride in a group, and thus my interest has been piqued by the Scala Rider G4 PowerSet and its list of unique features.

I'm going to cut immediately to the chase. This system has a bike-to-bike intercom range of up to a mile. I can think of several instances in my recent riding history where this feature would have made life easier. Those of you who ride with other bikers know what I'm talking about. It is very easy to become separated, especially at crucial times in cities. The G4 PowerSet would be a huge plus in situations like that. Think of another common situation. One rider's gas gauge reading low? Instead of dangerous maneuvers to catch up and give some hand signal, with this intercom system, all riders can be easily brought up to speed on the situation.

The Powerset's unique system allows communication between two bikers and two passengers or among three separate bikers. It is also made more versatile by multi-device connectivity (think Bluetooth, iPod, etc.). The unit even has the ability to transmit useful information regarding the connectivity status to other bikers.

In short, the Scala Rider G4 PowerSet is a powerful and rider-friendly communication tool. The unit is becoming very popular with touring riders because of its amazing versatility. It has me rethinking my view of motorcycle intercoms.

The Camos uses Bluetooth 2.0 technology, which means faster communication and longer battery life. On a single two-hour charge, the Camos will last 150 hours in standby and give you 10 hours of talk time. That much talk time seems unnecessary, but it's perfect if you're camping and away from an outlet for a couple days.

The Camos is waterproof and will maintain acoustic quality up to 80 mph, according to the manufacturer. The stereo sound is a huge plus over single speaker systems, and voice command capabilities let you keep your hands on the handlebars. There have been complaints about set-up difficulty, but once it's up and running the Camos is easy to use.

As always, though, be cautious with any communication devices. The highway is no place for impassioned cell phone conversations.
