I am intrigued by the premium (and pricey) motorcycle apparel brands as much as anyone. However, in these tough times, finding a company that continually produces quality protective wear at an affordable price is nice. Olympia is just such a company. I have found Olympia gear to be affordable, not cheap -- and that's the key.

The Olympia Airglide 2 Jacket has a feature list that transcends its price point. The jacket's 500 denier DuPont Cordura shell includes ballistic airflow mesh panels for incredible airflow. It includes adjusters at the collar, cuffs, elbows, and waist. For wet weather, it includes a thermal waterproof liner.

OK, so it's a versatile jacket, but what about protection? There are some pleasant surprises here. Yes, the jacket includes the industry standard CE-approved armor at the impact points of the arms and shoulders. However, CE-approved armor is also included in the back in the form of a "Motion Flex" articulated back protector. CE back armor is an "option" in much more expensive jackets. Obviously, Olympia has not cut corners on this jacket.

The Airglide is offered in 5 color combinations including a popular high-visibility neon yellow. Available sizes are small through 4XL. A quality jacket at a reasonable price -- can you beat that?

Motorcycle Denim Racing Pants, Zip Off Blue | Thor MX Nylon Static Shorts

I began my motorcycle riding obsession over three decades ago on dirt bikes. To this day, I still ride in the dirt, and I still love it. However, there is one thing that has always stuck in my craw -- the overly trendy and gaudy nature of off-road riding apparel. Enter the Thor Motocross Static Pants. Can a pair of riding pants be all things to all riders? It seems that these pants can.

The cut is of the over-the-boot style (which I prefer). When the ride is over, you can simply zip off the lower pant-legs and you have a pair of shorts. That's a nice feature for cooling down after a long dirt ride. The pants offer other nice touches like a cordura nylon seat panel, double and triple needle stitching, and ballistic nylon inner leg panels for heat resistance.

So what was that about all things to all riders? Just take a look at the color and logo options. The pants come in understated, monochromatic themes for a boring guy like me. However, for you flashier types, the pants are also offered in a kind of star-studded camo motif as well as a wild paisley print. These are nice pants with a load of nice features.

Men’s White Leather Motorcycle Jacket & Liner | Icon Accelerant Armored

The Icon Men's Accelerant leather jacket is simply a quality piece of riding apparel. Icon has a reputation for being a company that appeals to the young and trendy segment of the riding community. Some of their gear is, in my opinion, a little "over the top" stylistically. However, I find the Accelerant to be right on target in the looks department. The two-tone styling with the prominent "Icon" logo across the chest has a bit of a classic look. Some may question the external alloy inserts on the back and shoulder, though.

The jacket is constructed of 1.2-1.4 mm. cowhide with "strategically placed" stretch ballistic nylon for fit and support. In addition to the above-mentioned external armor, the jacket is fitted with CE approved shoulder, elbow, and forearm protection.

Climate control takes the form of shoulder venting for warmer rides, and a removable insulated windproof liner for the cool end of the spectrum. The jacket comes in sizes small through 4XL. Keep in mind that this is a more aggressively cut jacket than some of Icon's offerings. While some incorporate a relatively full "urban" cut, this is more of a sport cut. Take that into consideration when you size this jacket, especially through mail-order.

Fieldsheer Expander Tail Bag | Black Ballistic Nylon Waterproof

As long as the weather holds, I will be doing every chore on my bike. That can get cumbersome, but I'm stubborn and still pretty sure you can transport a 6-foot piece of conduit on a bike. There's got to be a way...

Regardless, a good bag will hold most of what you need. Fieldsheer's Expander tail bag is big enough for a fully-loaded sack of groceries. We're talking paper bags, not those little plastic ones. For a weekend trip, you ought to be able to fit your clothes, gear, snacks, and whatnot in the fully expanded 16-inch wide, 16-inch long, and 11-inch high bag. The width goes down to 12.5 inches when you don't need the room.

Constructed of 1680 denier ballistic nylon, the Expander boasts a waterproof outer shell. I'm confused as to why it comes with a rain cover if it's waterproof, so you might want to use the cover just to compensate for Fieldsheer's apparent uncertainty on the matter.

A rigid base with a neoprene protector helps this bag keep its shape and makes your stuff easy to find. There are a few organizer pockets and external pockets to save you dig time, and lots of reflectors to help keep you safe. The mounting system has the option of built-in bungees with removable neoprene protectors, or saddlebag attachment. Both methods are quick release for easy carry off.

The worst complaint I've heard about this tail bag is that it fades in the sun -- after three years. Fieldsheer has included all the features that riders want and didn't go overboard adding things that are cute, but completely unnecessary. The suggested retail is about $90, but you can find the Expander for a much better price if you look around.

Tail bags are a great alternative to tank bags. You can use both, but if you have a great paint job that you don't want to cover up, a tail bag will serve every non-map purpose of the ever-popular tank bag.

Cortech's Sport tail bag is an excellent example of the versatility these bags offer. The exterior is 1680 denier ballistic nylon, and the interior has a soft tri-coat lining. The bag itself offers 16 liters of storage capacity that can expand to 18 liters. Most of this space is in the main top loading compartment, but there are internal pockets to help keep everything organized.

This tail bag might not be enough for you, but there are built-in buckles for Cortech's saddlebags. These buckles store neatly away under a Velcro flap when not in use, which makes this bag easier to carry considering it has a shoulder strap and rubberized carry handle. Reflective striping and a complementary rain cover make this bag as road worthy as any riding gear.

The attachment mechanism is the only point of contention. The bag does attach to the bike securely with built-in bungee cords, but they are not covered, and bikes with wide tail ends might meet with some unnecessary wear. If Cortech could throw some neoprene covers on those cords, this would greatly improve the product.

While the road riding community argues, whines, and moans about personal protective equipment, the motocross folks have been developing it. I'm not insulting the people who ride cruisers. I'm in that lot myself. But it seems that we're always talking about the level of protection a rider should have. It ranges from those who ride shirtless with jeans and no helmet, to those who ride bedecked with armor from head to toe.

Motocross riders are making lighter, stronger armor because they know they need it. A product of these advances is the BJ33 Ballistic Jersey. Molded polyethylene panels adorn the chest, shoulders, back, and elbows to provide the rider with superior protection in the most likely impact areas and everywhere else that you should keep safe. Between and beneath these panels is a ballistic mesh fabric that will keep the air flowing and prevent overheating.

The BJ33 is lightweight and, amazingly, fully machine washable. Regardless of the mesh, you're probably going to sweat -- so that washability is a good feature to have. Stretch panels will ensure that your armor fits where it's supposed to be and can therefore protect you the way it is designed to.

Although the BJ33 Ballistic Jersey is made for motocross, anyone -- regardless of their level of paranoia -- can pick one of these up to bolster their level of protection. If you need to know why you might want the BJ33, just think of the term "ballistic." It's synonymous with "projectile," and should you find yourself traveling through the air subject to the will of gravity, you might want to be wearing some body armor.
