Cleaning and changing the air filter on your quad is one of those dreaded yet so very necessary maintenance routines everyone has to live with. Decades ago K&N set out to simplify and change the way we do things when it comes to air filters.
At first glance, the price might turn you off to getting a K&N air filter. Yes, they are more expensive than the OEM-type foam filters, but you have to consider that the K&N filter will last for the life of your ATV.
The completely washable and reusable K&N filter is made out of a special cotton gauze sandwiched between aluminum wire mesh. It certainly has a different feel compared to foam filters, but K&N claims its design drastically improves airflow and increases power by about one to 4 extra ponies -- all while still keeping dirt and dust out of your engine in even the nastiest of conditions. You won't have to outfit your KVF with any special equipment to get the filter to fit. It's designed to meet OEM specs.
K&N does use a special oil though. Directions for applying it are bit different from what you might be used to, so pay attention to that.
Perhaps one of the biggest bonuses of the design and oil K&N uses is that your filter can usually go two to three times longer between cleanings than traditional filters. For some, that alone is practically priceless. So if you can stomach the initial cost of the K&N filter, the performance gains and convenience factor make it worth checking out.
