Bike too loud? Already have a Rush slip-on muffler, but can Harley hear yourself think? Actually, you need to purchase these sold-separately baffle kits when you purchase your slip-ons. As with other parts, of course, these wear out over time and will need eventual replacement. Replacing an exhausted baffle (sorry) helps maintain the correct back-pressure relative to your carburetion setup, and this can aid in keeping your motor running at its peak efficiency without having to fine- or re-tune.
The baffle "kit" is essentially a perforated metal cylinder installed inside the muffler (slip-on) body. On some baffles, a wrap or packing is placed around the outside of the baffle, and this further helps to calm and smooth out exhaust thunder. As well, some baffles are only partially covered; the Rush baffle kit covers the full length of the baffle's perforated section.
This is Rush's stock replacement; there are other companies producing replacement baffles oriented toward higher performance.
Installation is similar to any exhaust repair--parts burn into place, so you may have some work getting the old baffle out. One caveat, too: read the directions, as many applications are directional. The price of these isn't bad, especially when spread out over how long they'll likely last.
