I'm so embarrassed. I went to a party last weekend where bikes were parked around a bonfire providing a great place to sit and have a beer, but I couldn't pack everything on my bike. This is pretty surprising for me because I pride myself on being quick with a bungee, but I had to defer to a friend with a car to bring the food. Shameful. I've put off using a tank bag because I really like my paint job, but I don't like it more than my independence.
Chase Harper's 450 magnetic tank bag is probably as much as I need. I'm going to say right off that the price is on the high side for the capacity, but Chase Harper makes some quality bags which are worth the expense if you have a habit of abusing your equipment. Still, at 12 inches long, 9 inches wide, and only 3 inches high, you might be able to get more space for around $80 elsewhere. If the price doesn't throw you, I want your life, and you should read on for the specs.
Constructed of 1000-denier DuPont Cordura, the tapering design makes it perfect for most cruiser tanks. Being 12 inches long, you should be able to figure out if it'll fit a sport tank if that's what you have. Industrial-grade magnets tucked in the wings will hold this bag to your tank with bulldog tenacity and won't scratch your finish. In addition to the main compartment, there are some top pockets for keys and whatnot and a bungee-covered external mesh pocket with reversible map pouch. A rubberized handle makes carry-off comfortable.
A bit of extra storage can't hurt. It might even free you from 4-wheeled favors.
