This new Shark Evoline Absolute Helmet is certainly that. It's hard to know where to start. I guess it makes sense to start with the helmet's most striking feature: the patented Tech-Move System Chinstrap. The chin bar unlocks, moves to a back position, and integrates with the lines of the shell. Such an "outside the box" design is sure to inspire strong reactions both pro and con. However, most initial rider comments are positive, so it seems Shark has done something right here.

With such a innovative chin bar, it's easy to overlook the helmet's other features. The shell is constructed of an injected thermoplastic resin. Venting comes in the form of integrated channels, and the interior padding is removable and washable.

The helmet does not carry Snell certification, but it meets or exceeds D.O.T. and ECE 22-05 standards. It is warranted for 5 years, which is reassuring. The helmet comes in sizes extra small through extra large.

I am a traditionalist, so I'm not sure what to think about the new Shark Evoline Absolute helmet. If it proves to hold up to use, and more importantly to crashes, this may be a design of the future. Shark is an up-and-coming manufacturer, and they are certainly testing the new technology market.

Advertised as a modular, it'd also be easy to label as a convertible because it can be altered from a full-face helmet to a half helmet. The French company Shark is relatively new to the U.S. market, but they'll definitely draw attention to themselves with the Evoline.

The most obvious feature-and where the 'evolutionary' part of the name originates--is its rollover chin-guard. Raise the visor, push the red button at the inside front, and the jaw of the helmet disengages up and over to the back of the helmet. In place, the now reversed lower piece fits in like an intended three-dimensional design on a half-helmet.

And then you get the "jet" feature: a second visor inside the first. You activate the sun visor by reaching up and sliding a lever on the top of the helmet. And of course this works whether or not you have the chin-guard in place. This by itself is an awesome addition, in my opinion.

You might expect that with this sort of versatility would come a looseness of fit between all those moving parts. Not so. The Evoline doesn't whistle or leak at the visor or the seams of the moveable parts. The moving parts lock solidly into place and don't rattle or vibrate. This is a top-quality helmet and beautifully finished. The liner is comfortable and removable, and the helmet cinches to your head with a standard D-ring fastener.

In the upper mid-range as helmets go, this is a fairly good deal for an interesting and highly adaptable helmet.

You already know how well-designed, comfortable, and robust the Shark helmets are, but there's no sense in having a top-of-the-line helmet with a scratched-up visor. Just because your helmet is going to protect your brain in a crash, that doesn't mean you want to invite one because you can't see.

This Shark face shield has a mirrored blue tint to reduce the glare of the sun. Sunglasses don't help as much as you would suspect when you're driving north or south at sunset. You just end up riding blind on one side. A daytime shield will save you neck pain from having to ride with your head twisted, looking sideways down the road to keep your glasses angled at the sun.

I've never dropped my helmet, but somehow the visor always seems to get scratched. There must be some very sharp bugs out in the world. This shield is treated to provide scratch and fog resistance. Replacement visors are readily accessible and, considering the quality of the visor and the helmet, the cost is not surprisingly high.

Remember that the blue tinted visor is not intended for night use. Clear visors are also available and, if you want the tint, you can select from light smoke, dark smoke, chrome mirror, or the blue mirror.
