Truckers and bikers. Leather and synthetic. Usually, these things are in opposition, but every now and then they come together in the spirit of peace and harmony. River Road's luggage liners bring the beneficial attributes of modern synthetic materials to your leather saddlebags, but tuck away and are your hidden arsenal against the elements. Hey, just because you're willing to use textile bags, that doesn't mean you're willing to admit it.

Constructed of water resistant materials, River Road's liners are 22 inches wide, 10.5 inches high, and 14.5 inches deep. These will fit nicely in slanted bags with the aforementioned dimensions. A 2-way zipper lets you open these any way you find convenient, and interior side and lid pockets give you the organizational ability that's usually lost on those leather buckets we call saddlebags.

A one-year manufacturer's warranty lets you take stock in the quality, and the fact that they're safe behind the leather means they'll last far longer than that. All this talk about how your leather protects these liners doesn't sit so well, so I can tell you that they protect your leather just as well.

There's no real reason to pick up a set of liners if you have high-end bags. The main failing of River Road's liner setup is that you only need it if your bags are cheap, or old and crumbling like mine. In that case, at $30, they're cheaper than a new set of leather bags and will let you keep the set to which you may have grown so irrationally attached.

River Road Mens Cruiser Gloves, Retro | Distressed Brown Leather Outlaw http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-outlaw-gloves-mens-vintage-distressed-brown-leather/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-outlaw-gloves-mens-vintage-distressed-brown-leather/#comments Fri, 13 Nov 2009 20:55:49 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=4451 River Road Outlaw Gloves When a manufacturer says their leather is "distressed," they mean that it looks like you've put the miles on it when you haven't. To get that look on some modern leather, after it's been softened and treated, you have to buy it. The way old leather used to scuff was because it would dry, but now every stitch goes long before the leather gets the tell-tale signs of your riding history.

River Road's Outlaw Vintage leather gloves reflect true to history wear patterns. Cuffs, high spots, and seams look like the leather is going, but they are still ready to accompany you for many miles ahead. The color is a rich dark brown that will match the rest of River Road's Vintage line or look just fine with most other gear.

Perforated leather and four venting holes on the back of the glove will keep your hands cool on those sunny rides. A minor caution, so you're not disappointed if you think you're getting a different look: the holes on the back are not meant to go over the knuckles.

There are no inset armor panels or carbon fiber protectors. These classic cruiser gloves are just made to protect from cold, wind, and abrasion. River Road has included a gel pad in the palm to take the buzz out of your hands.

These are fine leather gloves. They cost around $25, give or take a couple bucks, and River Road provides a one-year manufacturer's warranty. If you've been trying for years to break in a pair of gloves, only to have them mock you with indestructibility, these might satisfy that burning desire to have your efforts seen.

River Road Jacket, Street Cruiser Race | Unisex Black Leather Tapered w/ Liner 42 http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-race-jacket-black-leather-tapered-w-liner/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-race-jacket-black-leather-tapered-w-liner/#comments Fri, 09 Oct 2009 20:28:01 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=4243 River Road Race Jacket The streetbike community is overrun, drowning in a deluge of textile jackets. Don't get me wrong; there are companies, like Icon, that make some great leathers for the street rider. There is, however, a particular style to this kind of jacket, and manufacturers will charge you an arm and a leg for the privilege of being one of the fashionable few. If you don't need skulls and multi-colored panels, give River Road's Race Jacket a look.

The lines and cut fall somewhere between streetbike and cruiser style, and won't look out of place on either rider. Constructed of abrasion-resistant leather and equipped with a removable liner, this jacket slides on comfortably. The fit is adjustable with side snaps, and the snap closure collar is high enough to protect your neck from the roaring wind.

A tapered cut that's longer in the back will allow the rider to lean in and be comfortable in the tucked position required of some sport machines. One of the major drawbacks of this jacket, however, is an utter lack of ventilation. Riding on the street in the summer is sweaty business if you get caught in traffic, and I think it's a huge mistake on River Road's part to exclude such a common feature. You can unzip the sleeves to get some more airflow, but it just doesn't cut it.

The leather and stitching are made to last, and a 2-year warranty backs them up. For this amount of beautiful black leather, the $160-$200 price tag is not a surprise and better than some of their trend-conscious competitors. River Road sells their Race jacket in women's or men's cuts.

Here's another fully-adjustable unisex jacket by REV'IT!

River Road Side Zip Black Boots | Mens Highway Riding Footwear http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-side-zip-black-boots-mens-highway-riding-footwear/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-side-zip-black-boots-mens-highway-riding-footwear/#comments Thu, 08 Oct 2009 14:21:41 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=4240 River Road Side Zip Black Boots I had a bad habit of wearing my regular shoes and non-riding boots on the bike. This has resulted in melted soles, split toes, and more wear and tear than the shoe manufactures anticipated. I thought I was saving money by not investing in a riding boot, but instead I had to buy more shoes more frequently. It was not a money-saving plan.

Now, if you're pinching those elusive pennies, River Road's Highway boots are one way to save on riding wear. The rubber soles are thick with a deep tread. They are oil-resistant, and the sole can be replaced if you wear it out before the rest of the boot. The Goodyear welt construction lends durability to the Highway boot, and the padded insoles add all-day comfort. These are breathable to prevent swampy feet on long rides, and a tempered steel shank will help these boots maintain their shape over time and in a crash.

I have mixed feelings about the zipper sides. The side-zip style does make them very easy and fast to put on and take off, but then why on earth are there laces? All the lace system does is make a place where water and rain can enter your boots. I would also worry about zipper failure, but in this case the zipper seems sound, and the 1-year warranty eases the mind.

For highway riding, this boot will do what you need it to for $80 or $90. That's far cheaper than most riding boots, and you won't be going through shoe after shoe. If you don't want to change footwear, these will wear just fine off the bike.

River Road Small Saddlebags | Black Synthetic Classic w/ Braid, Studs http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-classic-saddlebags-black-compact-w-braid-studs/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-classic-saddlebags-black-compact-w-braid-studs/#comments Tue, 06 Oct 2009 14:05:30 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=4229 River Road Classic Saddlebags As much as everyone tries, a lot of the new fancy luggage just doesn't hold up to the classic appeal of saddlebags. You know, I couldn't really tell you why they rank higher than tail bags, tank bags, or sissy bar bags, but they do and probably always will. Now, there have been some advances in saddlebags as well, but if you're looking for a good, old-fashioned set of saddlebags, River Road's Compact bags are almost perfect.

They are inexpensive, at around $70 depending on your vendor. You have the option of piped or braided edges, with or without studs. So that covers most varieties of classic bags. Reinforced walls and base provide strength and help these bags maintain their shape. My bags are starting to split at the seams because they lack reinforcement, so trust me it's a worthwhile feature.

There are some modern features to these classic-looking bags. They have hidden quick-release buckles for added convenience. On the back, or the front depending on how you mount them, there are pockets. These are great for sunglasses, cameras, and anything you might want to get to in a hurry.

Earlier, I mentioned that these are "almost" perfect. Well, they are synthetic leather. They'll look real and offer UV protection, but it's not a true classic style if it's not leather, so they don't quite cut it. The price may make up for that small drawback, and the 1-year warranty is certainly appealing. Just be sure you subject them to all the rigors in that first year to be sure they're tough enough for you.

River Road Womens Basic Jacket | Black Leather Nylon w/ Liner http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-womens-basic-jacket-black-leather-nylon-w-liner/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-womens-basic-jacket-black-leather-nylon-w-liner/#comments Wed, 30 Sep 2009 23:30:08 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=4246 River Road Womens Basic Jacket Sometimes you look at a product and you don't have to give two thoughts about its purpose. River Road's Basic leather motorcycle jacket is just that: a basic motorcycle jacket. You look at it and you know that it's cut and designed for riding because it looks like the jackets in every biker movie. Not that we're all trying to be Steve McQueen, but this style of jacket has earned a place in history, and this one is cut just for women.

Constructed of full-grain leather and with a light, quilted liner, this is an excellent jacket to protect you from abrasion. It wouldn't be an old-school jacket if it had armor, so you're going free and easy. That's great for comfort, but won't save your bones on impact. You might want to learn how to take a fall.

Nylon stitching holds all that leather together with impressive durability. Nylon thread isn't as subject to weather degradation as cotton or other natural fibers. Leather, plus nylon, equals a 2-year warranty. Keep your leather oiled, and this jacket will be with you a lot longer than that.

The Basic comes with no vents and no removable weather lining. Obviously you can wear it over a sweater in the cold, but really hot weather could get trying. The adjustable waist and zip-up collar are perfect for a good fit and to keep out the cold. Regardless of the lack of modern frills, the Women's Basic is a fine, fine jacket that makes me think I could give up some security for a little more freedom.

It'd look absolutely killer with these Bombshell boots.

River Road Womens Leather Chaps | 5 Pocket Pants, Open Leg Snaps http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-womens-leather-chaps-5-pocket-pants-open-leg-snaps/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-womens-leather-chaps-5-pocket-pants-open-leg-snaps/#comments Tue, 01 Sep 2009 16:22:24 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=3084 River Road Womens Leather Chaps Leave your favorite jeans and your chaps laying around together too long with some Barry White playing, and you just might end up with something akin to River Road's 5-pocket pants. These combine the best features of chaps with the convenience and styling of jeans.

Designed for women riders, these pants are cut for comfort and fit. Constructed of heavy-duty milled cowhide, the rider will be protected from abrasion but still be able to move freely without feeling restricted by the material. These will protect better than chaps because they provide full coverage.

As the name states, these pants have 5 pockets for your daily carry items, such as wallets and keys. The design also incorporates an open-leg style with snap closures at the bottom and a full-length zipper. These features make River Road's pants easy to put on and then take off again at the end of a long ride.

The pants are lined with nylon everywhere above the knee. This will prevent that leather stick that riders occasionally suffer in hot weather and will give your skin a little breathing room. Leather pants aren't for everyone, but if they're your style, you can get them in sizes 6 through 18.

River Road includes a 2-year warranty with these pants. The leather should last longer than that, so take care of these pants and they'll cover your hind side for years to come.

If you favor denim over leather, see these Icon Womens Motorcycle Jeans.

River Road Hoodlum Motorcycle Jacket | Black Leather 42 07J2152 http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-hoodlum-motorcycle-jacket-black-leather-42-07j2152/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-hoodlum-motorcycle-jacket-black-leather-42-07j2152/#comments Wed, 26 Aug 2009 00:55:17 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=2117 River Road Hoodlum Motorcycle Jacket Most things are designed to last these days, and what doesn't last is so fragile that it wears out before it wears in. You hardly ever see a nicely worn leather jacket anymore. My riding partner has had his jacket for seven years and it still looks new. Yes, I understand that durability is a sign of quality, but I miss the days of demonstrating your endurance by the level of wear on your gear.

The worn appearance of River Road's Hoodlum jacket is a lie, but a beautiful lie. To complement the broken-in look, the Hoodlum was given vintage styling. The construction is medium-weight leather, which will provide adequate abrasion protection. While the old-style look may be a lie, this really is a traditional riding jacket. The shell has no armor, no high-tech polymers, and no special coatings -- just leather. If you've been looking for a classic coat because you don't want all that technology, here's your jacket.

Two chest intake vents and one back outlet vent will help you keep cool under the black leather. The Hoodlum contains a full-sleeve removable insulated liner. A couple of standard hand pockets and one interior pocket will give you room for wallets and cellphones. The Hoodlum may be a no-frills jacket, but it's still well made and comes with a 2-year warranty.

River Road makes a similar version for the ladies with their Sierra leather jacket.

River Road Black Saddlebags | Zipoff Compact Travel Luggage http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-zipoff-black-saddlebags/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-zipoff-black-saddlebags/#comments Sat, 15 Aug 2009 21:53:46 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=1419 River Road Zipoff Black Saddlebags Imagine, if you will, a cloudless June morning. You step out into your driveway, carrying your work bag, on your way to the office. Birds are singing and a soft wind is carrying the smell of a million cups of coffee being poured in the east. On this glorious day, you open your car door to discover a sweltering hotbox that stinks of vinyl. Wouldn't you rather have a "take your bike to work" day?

River Road sells a zip-off, compact set of saddlebags that could make your ride to the office easier. Reinforced walls help these bags maintain their shape, while the UV-protected synthetic leather keeps the price down. Since you don't want to look like a degenerate on your way into work, these bags look little different than any modern, soft briefcase. You can zip them off your bike and whistle your way to work, looking classy all the way.

River Road's bags are, of course, not just for the day laborer. Anyone who wants a low-hassle bag for the bike ought to give these a gander. These simple, piped-edge, strap-fastening bags have extra-long crossover flaps to protect whatever you pack. A 1-year manufacturer's warranty should give you confidence that these are not cheap; they're just inexpensive.

River Road Mens Chaps | Black Imported Leather Nylon http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-mens-black-leather-motorcycle-chaps/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/river-road-mens-black-leather-motorcycle-chaps/#comments Sun, 09 Aug 2009 20:28:36 +0000 Brad http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=1217 River Road Mens Black LeatherBack when your horse wasn't made of iron, chaps were born. Leather was the material of choice, because that was the only choice, period. Leather makes a good wind-breaker, is durable, generally won't tear except under extreme duress, and can be made nearly waterproof. It has a nice feel and a good earthy smell, too. And the more you wear a leather item, the better it tends to fit.

River Road's basic motorcycle chaps are the old "shotgun" or "pipe-stove" style, meaning they have a straight leg and a close fit. Made of top-quality, imported full-grain leather, they have full-length genuine YKK side zippers for easy on and off. Snap-down bottom closures will keep the cuff in place. The seams are nylon-stitched for strength and extra durability. And while they come in sizes from men's XS to XXXL, the bottoms can be trimmed to your preferred length.

If you need something to cut the breeze or keep you a little warmer on those cool mornings, these chaps will do the job. Leather is helpful in a fall, too, for preventing road rash. Not a cure by any means, but another tough layer at least.

River Road's basic chaps, for the price, are a pretty good deal. The manufacturer also provides a two year warranty from the purchase date.
