In the process of exploring, we took a "detour" through some tiny mountain towns. Suddenly, a friend got a flat on his Honda SuperHawk. There we were in the middle of nowhere (albeit a beautiful corner of nowhere), with darkness nearing. To make a long story short, he pulled out a plug kit and inflation CO2 cartridges. The repair was successful, and we safely made it to Taos before dark.

The MSR Tire Inflation Kit is a good option for the inflation of repaired tires. It includes a unique and ingenious L-shaped valve connection which requires no hoses. This adapter will work well in the tight spaces inherent in motorcycle rims. It also includes three CO2 cartridges and a carrying case.

You will notice I did not mention the repair kit included in this kit. That's because there isn't one. May kits include patches or plugs. However, I believe MSR feels that the repair kit will be specific to the bike on which the product will be used. Dirt riders will bring a patch kit or spare tube, while street riders will bring a radial tire plug kit.

The MSR kit is a good, compact tool. Just remember that it does not include the repair portion.

Don't get me wrong; high-end equipment is an investment and provides a lot of protection for motocross riders who need it. If you ride pro or every second of free time you have, shell out for the best, otherwise you can probably settle for middle-of-the-road and a $20 price tag, like MSR Racing's Renegade motocross gloves.

Designed with grip position architecture, the Renegade glove is constructed of dimpled mesh fabric on the back and fingers with a padded nash palm. The reinforced thumb and palm resist abrasion, and the injected rubber logos protect from impact. Lycra panels on the sides of the fingers and at articulation points allow for flexibility without sacrificing the protection provided by the stiffer material of the shell. Airprene cuffs offer comfort and non-slip stability.

Renegade gloves do lack a few features that have become popular for motocross riders, such as a carbon fiber knuckle protector and a longer wrist panel. These do fall shy when it comes to impact resistance, as the rubberized logos are on the fingers but not the knuckles.

All in all, you get a lot for the cost. Being mid-grade, you can't expect everything but you will get a good fit and a pair of gloves made with motocross in mind. The Renegade gloves come in youth and adult sizes in blue, red, orange, gray, and slate.

Knowing this, most manufacturers include minimal skid plates on new machines. But stock skid plates don't cover much and are often at least partially made of plastic. That's fine if you stick to a motocross track or the dunes, but they're not much protection anywhere else. For enduro or trail riding, you want some beefiness, and you want enough coverage to help protect those exposed lower radiator hoses and whatever else is hanging out down there. Think of it as "a bumper for your thumper," if you like -- or try to forget that now that I've said it...

MSR is generally known for quality gear and aftermarket parts for off-road riding. Their version of the enduro-style skid plate is similar to their competitor's models: thick aircraft-quality aluminum, a cut-out for the oil drain plug, all the requisite bumps and bulges to get around the shape of your frame and lower cases, and either drilled bolt holes or frame-clamps for mounting. The main plate is brake-press formed, while the "wings" (or side pieces) are TIG-welded in place. These are strong enough to grind over rocks and logs without much damage. They'll scratch up a little, but bending or denting these things usually requires some extraordinary punishment -- this being the point of installing one in the first place.

This MSR Skid Plate is available for many models of Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and KTM off-road bikes.
