As one would expect, I gave it high marks. Here is a helmet that I am even more excited about: the Arai RX-Q. Arai describes it as a "Corsair V for the street".

Simply put, Arai has designed this helmet from the ground up to be a premium helmet for the ultra-serious street rider. What that means is that you get the legendary quality of a top-of-the-line Arai, but with careful attention to real world stability, comfort, and noise control. Helmets designed primarily for racing don't necessarily shine in the "ride all day in comfort" realm. They're not designed for that; the Arai RX-Q is.

The RX-Q is shaped in an evolution of the "intermediate oval" that seems to be Arai's most universally fitting shell shape. Arai has also made serious advancements in the interior of this helmet, most notably the cheek pads, which improve comfort and reduce noise. The shell shape of this helmet has been developed to reduce drag and lift, thus reducing fatigue.

In the ventilation area, this helmet proves that less can truly be more. The exterior vent system looks relatively subtle. However, the design actually moves more air than more obtrusive designs while contributing to the helmet's quieter interior.

All the quality of the Corsair V, with features that make it more rider-friendly in the real world? Sounds like a winner to me.

The open-face design allows a less obstructed view of the road and motorcycle, and is much more convenient when off the motorcycle. The down-side is that an open-face helmet leaves the rider's face and jaw relatively unprotected in the event of a crash. If you weigh the pros and cons of the open-face design and come to the conclusion that this type of helmet is for you, the Arai SZ-Ram III could be a great choice.

I am a fan of Arai helmets. They are unsurpassed in attention to detail and overall quality. The SZ-Ram III is no exception. The helmet meets or exceeds the two most important safety ratings in the American market: DOT and Snell. In addition, it offers well-designed venting. There is adjustable helmet shell ventilation (with a fully adjustable Arai Type-5 diffuser system) as well as the Arai signature shield ventilation. The shell is constructed of a complex fiberglass composite and is hand-crafted like every Arai helmet. It has a ZR shield, holder, and base plates.

The last time I wore an open-faced helmet on a regular basis was back in the '70s. However, if I were to make that decision now, I would give this Arai SZ-Ram III serious consideration. Arai's comfort and safety ratings are second to none.

The Arai Corsair V is the most expensive helmet I've reviewed for SpotMotorcycles. However, if you are looking for an ultra-premium helmet that involves no performance or quality compromises, read on.

Let's first look at aerodynamics. The Corsair V utilizes Arai's exclusive new adjustable AirWing, which is designed to greatly reduce drag, turbulence, and buffeting at high speeds. Based on the comments of riders who have worn the helmet for extended hours, this feature works. I tend to believe these riders. After all, a rider who has forked out $800-900 on a helmet is probably discriminating and critical.

Venting is another strong point for the Corsair V. The helmet boasts an additional intake vent that assists in air-flow efficiency. It also has a larger eye-port which requires a special Series "I" face shield, which also is said to help with both aerodynamics and a quieter ride.

It would be naive to think this is the helmet for every street rider. I am an avid rider and would like to keep my head as protected as possible. I doubt that I will ever spend this kind of money on a helmet. My usual price point is about half of what this helmet goes for (and I've owned several Arais). That being said, if money is no object, why not buy the very best? The Arai Corsair V is certainly in the conversation as one of the very top few helmets available.

Should I wear a full-on dirt helmet and goggles? Sometimes this is the perfect set up -- especially in slower, dustier off-road conditions. But what about on more street-oriented rides, when the goggle and full visor setup is less than ideal? Should I wear my street helmet for aerodynamics and comfort? Well, sometimes, but when I do get off the pavement, the street helmet is less than ideal.

Since dual sport riding is a sweet compromise, shouldn't the helmet be, too? Well, yes it should. That's where the Arai XD-3 Trek helmet comes in. First off, it's an Arai, which inspires the highest level of confidence in its inherent safety. It's built to Arai's uncompromising quality standards.

So where is the compromise? Just look at the picture. At first glance, this is a typical dirt helmet. However, a closer inspection reveals the street-oriented shield hiding under the visor. The shield has a unique pivot that allows it to be opened under that peak without protruding.

If you are into both the street and dirt aspects of dual sport riding, or are a serious adventure tourer, this may be the perfect helmet. Its functionality is a compromise, not its quality.

One is tires, and the other is helmets. My experience with helmets is relatively extensive. I buy a new helmet every three years. However, I always seem to go back to the same three brands:  Shoei, Suomy, and Arai.

Arai has the unique distinction of offering helmet shells in shapes to fit various heads. In the Arai line, the Quantum shape seems to fit my head best. As we all know, helmet fit is critical to its ability to protect your grey matter.

The Arai Quantum 2 offers features you'd expect in a premium (and pricey) helmet. It has a removable liner, effective ventilation, and the newest Snell approval. Like all other Arais, it has impeccable build quality. In fact, every Arai is hand molded. The new Quantum 2 has a redesigned shape for improved aerodynamics, and also closer tolerances between the shield and shell for a quieter ride.

As much as I like and trust Arai helmets, there is still an element that I question. The Quantum 2 incorporates the funky Arai shield removal and installation procedure. Yes, I know how to do it. However, it still seems awkward and unnecessarily difficult to master. I much prefer Shoei's shield functionality.

In the end, you can't go wrong with an Arai. If you get the fit right, your head is in the best shell available. The Quantum 2 is simply a great helmet, and like I said, this is not an area to scrimp!

If money's no object and you want the best the world has to offer, buy an Arai. Lots of companies make very good helmets for protecting your skull and all its guts, but Arai is the top of the heap, so to speak.
The VX-Pro3 off-road helmet for 2009 replaces the VX-Pro, which was considered the industry standard by which other helmets should be measured. The Pro3 has at least one notable improvement over its predecessor, which is the 11mm increase in forward tilt of the chin-bar that gives more room for your face, and just plain feels more open. This is a good thing, as many helmets feel claustrophobic in that area especially when your goggles are on.

The Pro3 also has fully removable and washable interior padding so you can soak away the sweat and stench of a long day's ride, and the cheek pads have pull tabs that allow emergency personnel to more easily remove a helmet from an injured rider -- thankfully, this feature is becoming more prevalent throughout the industry.

Retained are the forehead vent-ports for better venting and for preventing "bucketing," or helmet-pull, at higher speeds. A stainless steel mesh in the chin-bar protects against roost and mud-packing, while the closeable vent gate gives you full control of airflow through the chin-bar.

These are light, strong, comfortable, well-designed helmets. You'll pay for it up front, but they'll last a long time, and you'll know your head is in good hands and as safe as technology can make it, at the moment.
