When you're on the track, it makes a lot of sense -- but honestly, I think that some riders feel like if their helmet is multi-colored and really stylized, then they have to the gear that matches. But what about when you just want to ride without all the pizazz?

The AVG K3 Full Face Motorcycle helmet is streamlined for a smooth look that will fit most every style of bikes. There really aren't a lot of graphics or markings on it, keeping a simplistic yet attractive look. One thing I like is it features a short neck in the back, perfect for sports bike riders. It's easy to get low and lay on the tank without having to keep your head in an awkward position. The removable interior padding is covered with the Dry-Lex hygienic treatment, which will help with odors and keep it smelling as fresh as a daisy in there. The face shield is nice because it's bigger than average, which gives you a better field of vision as well as being treated for anti-fog and anti-scratch. It can be removed and swapped out in seconds with the Extra Quick Release System (I know, corny name, but it works). The ventilation system contains the standard front air intakes and rear extractors; it's good to keep that fresh air coming in.

I've ridden in pretty much every condition that Mother Nature has dished out on me. Well, I haven't ridden through a tornado yet, but I'm sure that when one touches down in Portland, it will find me. Anyways, there have only really been a couple of times where my thrill of riding has outweighed my rational and safety-oriented thinking. And when the cop pulled me over and said, "Son, this ain't no race track," all I could reply was, "Well, my helmet is designed for it."

The GP-Tech Full Face Helmet made by AVG is one of those DOT helmets that screams for speed. It's made of a 2-piece dual-density carbon Kevlar construction which gives it superior strength. The venting is done by the IVS (Integrated Ventilation System), which features channels hollowed directly into the shell of the helmet. This helps keep you cool without direct exposure to the wind on your skin and actually cools the whole helmet down, instead of just your hair. The visor is an anti-fog and anti-scratch polycarbonate clear Racer-X visor with tear-off system, which takes only seconds to take off and replace with a tinted one without the use of any tools.

Try to keep in mind that just because the helmet is track-worthy, it doesn't make every road (even the deserted back country roads) an instant race track to blast down. You never know when Johnny Law will be there to remind you.

This is a bad-ass looking helmet that can transition nicely to street riding if you like the Camouflage look. Vintage styling brings to mind helicopter pilot helmets with the rounded shape, the Camo pattern, and the oversized dark visor. In addition to the dark visor, the helmet comes with a clear one as well, and they are easily interchangeable for your day-to-night riding experience.

AGV means quality as well as style. The helmet weighs a mere 3.4 pounds but they did not sacrifice safety. It is DOT certified and features a retention system with quick-release buckle and assisted ejection, meant to be done quickly with one finger. It has a luxurious velour interior for comfort (leave it to the Italians!), and the face shields are scratch-resistant. The dark one is 80% tinted and comes in a separate box for safe travel. There is an AGV sticker directly above the visor featuring the colors of the Italian flag in
the logo and another sticker on the side with no colors. The shield is on sturdy rivets for easy movement when you flip it up.

The Stealth Razor helmet is a premium helmet that incorporates features that a good helmet should. Let's talk safety first. The lid is both DOT and BSI-6658 Type A certified. Many European helmets use BSI standards rather then Snell. As far as shell construction, AGV uses a carbon Kevlar fiber stratification and core system for strength and light weight in this helmet model. It has a "hump" for enhanced aerodynamics.

Now let's look at the helmet's comfort features. It incorporates what AGV calls a "Dynamic Ventilation" system with airflow vents and extractors. It also features something that I really like in a helmet, which is fully removable and washable padding. It includes a neck roll.

I like the fact that the Stealth Razor uses a visor rotation mechanism without cover plates. This system is closer to Shoei's system than the cumbersome Arai system.

I find the styling on the Stealth to be interesting, yet tasteful. The black version is my preference, but it also looks good in the blue, gold, and red motifs.

You can smell it in the air. This morning I stepped out into my driveway to find a thin frost over everything. It feels sterile and unwelcoming. It is also a harbinger of much time to be spent in a car. Enough lamentation -- I'm not off the road yet, even if my fingers do tingle and burn as they warm up again after each ride.

While AGV's Cool Tex gloves are not designed for winter weather, they do provide a surprisingly thick layer that can insulate your pick-up sticks against the burgeoning bitterness in the air. On the other hand, actually on both hands, there are big vents that cool across the knuckles and back of the hand, but like I said, they're not designed for winter. These vents, along with tough textile, make the Cool Tex excellent for cool to warm weather but not so much for cold or hot.

Surprisingly lightweight, these gloves do boast armor on the knuckles and gel inserts in the palms. The gel does a good job of taking the buzz out of the ride, but they also reduce feedback and feel. To return a little of that feel, there are silicone strips on the fingertips.

All in all, AGV's Cool Tex are hit and miss. They work best in moderate conditions, and AGV struck an awkward balance between protection and flexibility. You certainly would do better to look at some of the bigger names in gloves, but they are not going to give you AGV's price. The Tex costs anywhere from $12 to $35, depending on the vendor. They do have a decent look and come in red, blue, or yellow.

If you've been considering a modular but didn't want to pay the investment price of some of the upper-end models, the Miglia brings high quality to a very affordable range.

At a fairly light 3 pounds 10.75 ounces, the Miglia weighs less than most of its competition. Lightness is good, as when the modular section is up you'll feel less strain upon your neck. And once placed on your bean, the chin-strap can be preset to your comfort level and conveniently releases with a handy thumb catch.

The liner and cheek pads are soft and comfortable, resembling microfiber and unlike the sometimes abrasive-feeling mesh material found in many lower-priced helmets. These are held in place by solid, well-placed snaps, are easy to remove, and can be washed.

The reassuringly thick clear visor seals well, won't twist much when you raise it up, and its four detents are solid-feeling. The modular section is released by a centrally-positioned button behind the chin curtain. A notch in the chin curtain guides your finger right to it, so there's no fumbling about. When closed, the modular section fits tight to prevent whistling or unwanted drafts.

Available in five colors plus flat black, this is not a splashy helmet. Styled more toward function, it's a subtle and pleasing design but won't snap heads around at first glance. If you seek modular, this one is hard to beat for price and quality, and should keep your head cozy as you put the miglia behind you.

I'm terrible at making the big decisions because I always want to make the "right" one. Any product that can assure me it will accommodate me during a sudden snowstorm in a desert has my vote. Maybe the AGV Sport Evolution/Rally combo textile can't do that, but the versatility is still impressive.

AGV calls this a 9-in-1 jacket. The removable and recombineable vest, mesh jacket, quilted liner, and rain-proof liner can be arranged in any order you please. In combination, the Evolution provides many of the features riders have come to know and love: CE armor, 3M reflective labels, high density padding, and adjustable waist and sleeves.

There is some attention to detail that I would like to note: the snaps are rubber coated. My last jacket had the neck protection strap's snaps rust after a year. It's nice to know AGV Sport thought of those little things.

This multi-jacket feature is all good and well, but I have to wonder if just applying many of these features to a single layer wouldn't have been better. Making the jacket waterproof with good old-fashioned zipper vents could have gone a long way in reducing bulk. This may be why the Evolution seems to be disappearing from a market where more and more features are being packed into single layer textiles.

I have yet to see anyone come up with efficient, safe, detachable arms. So, if you want the option of vest or full length, you may have found your jacket. The vest is multi-purpose and outfitted with lots of pockets. The price is low -- disturbingly low -- but that could very well be the result of shuffling off old stock.

The shell is constructed with carbon Kevlar fiber stratification and high resistance and absorption thermoplastic resins. The composite fibers keep it light but strong. To ensure this brain cage fits, the rider has the selection of two shell sizes and four internal EPS counter-shells. The right fit is important when it comes to comfort or crash.

The padding is removable and washable with hygienic treatment. Hydrofil fibers in the padding will wick moisture away from your head. The lining uses a honeycomb pattern to improve airflow from the venting system. This puts the S4 above its predecessor, the Stealth, which had poor air circulation quality due to the lining.

UV protection, anti-scratch, and anti-fog are all included. This helmet secures with the standard double D-ring, which I've heard is not true of all AGV helmets. I'm glad this one kept with what works, because I never trust the quick-release retention systems.

Now, a company could pick apart every square inch of their product and call it a feature. The price should let you know that you're not getting the best of everything. Their quick-release system for the visor, for instance, is not so quick and feels shoddy. You get the distinct impression that you're going to break it. Also, the helmet is louder than you would think from its sleek appearance.

At least none of the compromises were in shell quality. Either way, you'll look good wearing this helmet. No bits of plastic sticking up, an extended chin bar, smooth contours, and a simple but dramatic style make this a great looking full-face helmet.

They remind me of superhero suits. You just need a cape. But aside of the cool factor and the fact that you look like a space man ripping down the highway, racing suits offer a level of safety and comfort that is hard to obtain with more traditional riding gear such as leather coats and chaps. How many times have I found myself with a wet butt because rain either ran down the back of my coat and somehow found its way into my leather pants, or it puddled underneath my bum in the seat and eventually soaked the leather? If I had a quarter for every time that happened, I'd be living in the Hamptons with a standard poodle instead of north Portland with an insane Scottish terrier.

But I digress. This AGV Forza racing suit is gunmetal black, made of 1.4mm thick Brazilian leather. It is designed to maximize airflow and cooling, which is good because one of the drawbacks of one-piece suits is overheating in a poorly-designed suit. But the Forza is beautifully designed, with perforations in the torso and legs and Advanced Safety Seam Construction. It is abrasion-resistant and has double-stitching throughout the suit and triple stitching in all critical areas. There are Kevlar stretch panels on the inside of the
arms, behind the knees, and in the crotch.  It also comes with
removable armor.  There are reflective badges sewn into the design
that not only look good but increase night-time visibility.

The suit runs around $365 and can be found in US even sizes up to 52.

AGV began in 1945, building leather seats for bicycles. The company was owned by Amisano Gino of Valenza, Italy. They entered the motorcycle helmet market in 1948, and right away began endorsing racers as part of their marketing strategy.

The Blade is something new: a half-helmet with a little more. A two-thirds helmet, perhaps. Take a full-face helmet, cut off the chin-bar, leave the full visor on, and you come up with the Blade. You get better head protection than a half-helmet offers, plus a little more visor, and you can flip the visor up and shove food or drink into your head without removing the helmet.

For a very reasonable cost, many of the features of a more expensive helmet are present. The fit is snug and comfortable; the padding is all removable and washable; it's ventilated; and the visor has an anti-scratch coating. It comes in eight variations of five colors and two design themes, and is a surprisingly attractive helmet overall. You gotta wear one, and the Blade is not a bad way to go.
