What I am looking for are early reactions by my fellow rabid adventure tourers. When I searched for notes on the Klim Adventure Rally Jacket (and matching pants), the reactions were interesting (and prolific -- well over 800 opinions). For many riders, the first comment was that Klim makes high quality gear, and the Adventure Rally suit is no exception. The second reaction was certainly, "Over $2000 for the jacket and pants… wow!"

After initial sticker shock, one starts seeing the truly remarkable list of features in the Rally. It is constructed of a variety of GoreTex materials for waterproofing and breathability, as well as Kevlar and Cordura. It has an integrated hydration system. It has CE-approved armor in all the critical areas, including the back. It also has a waterproof neck-brace collar.

Storage? This jacket is all about storage. It has an integrated harness system for carrying heavy loads, as well as seven generous pockets.

Venting is mostly of the zippered variety, and those zippers are high-quality GoreTex waterproof zippers. In the end, when you regain consciousness after initially seeing the retail price, you'll see that this jacket and pants combo offers things that no other suit can. It is a good seller to a class of riders who are truly discriminating.

Fieldsheer Mens Motorcycle Rain Suit, One Piece | Sugo Max Waterproof Nylon http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/fieldsheer-mens-motorcycle-rain-suit-one-piece-sugo-max-waterproof-nylon/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/fieldsheer-mens-motorcycle-rain-suit-one-piece-sugo-max-waterproof-nylon/#comments Sun, 30 May 2010 20:26:41 +0000 Tim http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=5596 Fieldsheer Mens Motorcycle Rain Suit,I live in the beautiful Southwest, so rain suits are not typically on the forefront of my mind. For me they are a seldom used, unglamorous item relegated to some recess of my touring luggage.

That is all well and good, but when you need a good rain suit, you REALLY need a good rain suit. Last summer, I rode through 50 miles of driving rain from the White Mountains of Arizona to southwestern New Mexico. When I arrived in Silver City, NM, about 80% of my body was soaked. As it turned out, my cheap rain suit's seams had separated in the crotch area, and the coat had ridden up and allowed rain to permeate between the pants and coat. Needless to say, I now pay more attention to rain suits.

The Fieldsheer Sugo Max 1-Piece Rainsuit would have been my best friend on that lonely stretch of wet blacktop. The one-piece design would have alleviated a big portion of my problem on that trip. The double-stitched, overlapped, glued, heat-sealed, and electronically-welded seams would have prevented the rest. The shell of the Sugo is 100% Waterproof PU Coated Nylon. The suit includes a mesh liner and back venting for comfort and body moisture dissipation.

The only thing I would question about this suit is the predominately black color which could make it steamy when the sun finally comes out. Other than that, this is another great Fieldsheer offering.

Frogg Toggs Road Toad Suit | Motorcycle Rain Coat w/ Pants | Waterproof Jacket http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/frogg-toggs-road-toad-suit-motorcycle-rain-coat-w-pants-waterproof-jacket/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/frogg-toggs-road-toad-suit-motorcycle-rain-coat-w-pants-waterproof-jacket/#comments Wed, 30 Dec 2009 22:56:55 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=4736 Frogg Toggs Road Toad Suit The necessary evil of rain gear has come into its season. Sure, there are summer torrents, but a hearty rider can grit her teeth and tough it out 'til the next stop. In these cold days, the wet leads to a chill that extracts all the joy from a ride except for perhaps a little pride in being able to bull your way through it.

Frogg Toggs Road Toad rain gear is a full set of breathable polypropylene apparel. Of course, they are waterproof and cinch around the wrists, waist, and ankles to create a reliable fit. There is waterproof taping over seams, so you won't get seepage around the stitches.

Made to wear over your other gear or a big fluffy sweatshirt, Toggs are lightweight. There is a pocket pass-through so you won't be cut off from your wallet, and the hood zips off. The hood is designed to go under your helmet, but I've never found that to work very well. Maybe my helmet is too snug.

I don't see much rain on sunny days, so Frogg Eyzz technology is included, which is Frogg Toggs' reflective piping to enhance visibility. Available in black or gray, I recommend the gray if you want to increase your chance of being seen. The Road Toad suit is compact, and you can probably find a place in your bags for it.

The whole suit costs around $60, but there are some pretty serious drawbacks. The zipper is not well made, which can completely negate the function of rain gear. Also, Frogg Toggs seriously neglected biker specific needs, such as heat shielding; your pipes will melt right through these.

AGV Forza Racing Suit | Brazilian Leather Black Gunmetal One Piece http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/agv-forza-racing-suit-brazilian-leather-black-gunmetal-one-piece/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/agv-forza-racing-suit-brazilian-leather-black-gunmetal-one-piece/#comments Fri, 18 Sep 2009 14:58:05 +0000 Star http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=3932 AGV Forza Racing Suit Racing suits are cool. They remind me of superhero suits. You just need a cape. But aside of the cool factor and the fact that you look like a space man ripping down the highway, racing suits offer a level of safety and comfort that is hard to obtain with more traditional riding gear such as leather coats and chaps. How many times have I found myself with a wet butt because rain either ran down the back of my coat and somehow found its way into my leather pants, or it puddled underneath my bum in the seat and eventually soaked the leather? If I had a quarter for every time that happened, I'd be living in the Hamptons with a standard poodle instead of north Portland with an insane Scottish terrier.

But I digress. This AGV Forza racing suit is gunmetal black, made of 1.4mm thick Brazilian leather. It is designed to maximize airflow and cooling, which is good because one of the drawbacks of one-piece suits is overheating in a poorly-designed suit. But the Forza is beautifully designed, with perforations in the torso and legs and Advanced Safety Seam Construction. It is abrasion-resistant and has double-stitching throughout the suit and triple stitching in all critical areas. There are Kevlar stretch panels on the inside of the
arms, behind the knees, and in the crotch.  It also comes with
removable armor.  There are reflective badges sewn into the design
that not only look good but increase night-time visibility.

The suit runs around $365 and can be found in US even sizes up to 52.

Frogg Toggs Bull Frogg | Unisex Rain Suit PS1072-02 http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/frogg-toggs-bull-frogg-rain-suit-ps1072-02/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/frogg-toggs-bull-frogg-rain-suit-ps1072-02/#comments Sun, 30 Aug 2009 21:56:33 +0000 Star http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=2138 Frogg Toggs Bull Frogg Rain SuitAbout 3 years ago some of us rode from Portland, Oregon to Reno, Nevada, in June. Although it was late June, we hit the craziest weather you can think of. In every tiny little town we stopped, people said, "Sure is crazy weather fer this time of year". In some towns, depending on the weather, people looked at us and said, "You ain't ridin in this, are you?" Umm... no. I was thinking about parking right here until late summer. Yes, I am riding in this.

Anyway... We hit freezing rain, freezing fog, golf-ball-sized hail, snow, gale-force winds, and just about everything miserable you can imagine. No-one had enough to wear. And although we had layers, we didn't have rain suits. In Lakeview, California, where it was snowing, we bought roping gloves and cheap rubber rain suits. And we rode on. By the time we got to Portland, we were wearing the remains of shredded yellow plastic suits -- they literally flew off us in pieces.

How I wish I had a Frogg Togg Bullfrog Rain Suit. It is lightweight, breathable, and tough, made from 100% second-generation polypropylene, which makes it puncture resistant. It has sealed seams and hook-and-loop adjustable cuffs, making it practically watertight. The cost runs between $59 to $85 depending on your size, so this is well worth it. It folds up small when you aren't wearing it, and when you need to wear it, boy are you happy you have it! And it won't shred off you in bits of yellow plastic debris littering the California highways, and you don't have to explain your silly roping gloves to every gas station attendant you meet.

Tour Master Elite Series II | Mens Motorcycle Rainsuit http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/tour-master-elite-series-ii-mens-motorcycle-rainsuit/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/tour-master-elite-series-ii-mens-motorcycle-rainsuit/#comments Mon, 17 Aug 2009 23:13:20 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=2088 Tourmaster Elite Series II Riding with a good waterproof coat, or even a 2-piece rain suit, won't stop a torrent of rainwater from running down your back, into your pants, or through any tiny gap in your gear. If you know the weather will be foul on your trip, suck it up and throw on a rainsuit.

Tour Master's Elite Series II is a one-piece suit constructed of waterproof nylon, backed by polyurethane, and sewn up with sealed seams. A high microfiber-lined neck with a storable Aqua-Barrier under-the-helmet hood will prevent your spine from becoming a riverbed.

The Elite rainsuit is meant to be worn over your other gear. Elastic cuffs and waist will give you the right fit regardless of the level of riding protection you wear under it, and the Scotchlite reflective piping and logos will ensure your night riding visibility.

Rain doesn't mean cold, so Tour Master included underarm grommets and a polyester mesh lining for air circulation from the scoop vent system. Air access means water access, so all of the outlets and intakes have been strategically placed to allow water to flow over but not in.

Tour Master included a hanging loop in the design. After a long, wet ride, you can leave your suit to hang-dry as you hit the pub. Style is lacking in any one-piece suit. I don't know why, but as soon as you attach pants to a coat, it's footy pajamas all over again. Remember, looking like a wuss is better than looking like you peed yourself. Available in black, red, blue, or yellow, a one-piece rain suit is worth every penny.

Here's another rain suit to consider from Fieldsheer.

Alpinestars One Piece Motorcycle Racing Suit | Moisture Wicking Black Fitted Tech http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/alpinestars-tech-race-one-piece-suit/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/alpinestars-tech-race-one-piece-suit/#comments Tue, 04 Aug 2009 23:38:27 +0000 Ila http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=2033 Alpinestars Tech Race One Piece Suit The last thing you'd think of in the dead heat of summer would be putting on another scrap of clothes. It seems against all logic that putting on Alpinestars' Tech Race suit could actually make you cooler, but that's precisely what it's designed to do. The Tech Race is a one-piece suit. It's essentially underwear that goes beneath your riding gear. The polyamide material wicks sweat and moisture away from your skin, keeping you from stewing in your gear. If you wear leathers when you ride, you won't find anything better for getting in and out of your gear. I'm sure you've tried to pull on (or pull off) your leathers after basking in 80-degree weather; it feels like you're going to need three other guys to help you get dressed. The Tech Race suit not only keeps you cool and dry, but the suit itself doesn't get soaked, so you can take your leathers on and off all day without trouble. The fit is standard, and it's meant to be snug so that you won't have to buy larger gear to go over it. There are two zippers for when nature calls, and it's washable. The price is on the high side, but you can't put a price on comfort and endurance when you're at the track. Other suits might trap heat, but with the Tech Race suit you know you're going to get what you pay for. Alpinestars also gives you the option of their Tech Race gear in a two-piece set.

Nelson-Rigg PVC Rain Suit | Two Piece AX-1 MK III http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/nelson-rigg-pvc-rain-suit-two-piece-ax-1-mk-iii/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/nelson-rigg-pvc-rain-suit-two-piece-ax-1-mk-iii/#comments Fri, 31 Jul 2009 06:14:16 +0000 Brad http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=2668 2008_Nelson-Rigg_AX-1_MK_III_Two-Piece_RainsuitStaying dry on a ride is high on my list of priorities. But then I don't really know anyone who actually enjoys becoming soaked to the bone. Even ducks don't like it. That's why they're… well, you know… waterproof.

Meanwhile, Nelson-Rigg has been supplying rain protection since 1972. Their AX-1 Mk III two-piece rain suit is constructed of polyester with a PVC coating. The seams are heat-sealed for complete waterproofing. Vents in the underarm and back help keep air moving, and the pants are vented as well. The jacket is also mesh lined to further aid air flow. A Velcro "storm flap" covers the front zipper. The two big outer pockets are waterproof, too. The jacket comes in black-on-black or your choice of black with red, black with yellow, black with orange, or black with charcoal.

The pants are suspendered and have an elastic waist. Getting these on over boots is made easier with Velcro cinch straps and 17" gussets. Both jacket and pants have highly visible reflective striping.

These two-piece rain suits are very reasonably priced and come with a 2-year "no hassle" warranty. Nelson-Rigg stands behind their products, and feedback from the web backs them up regarding the AX-1 Mk III's durability and functionality.

AGV SP6 Leather Suit | Gunmetal Armor 28010406 http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/agv-sp6-leather-suit-gunmetal-armor-28010406/ http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/agv-sp6-leather-suit-gunmetal-armor-28010406/#comments Sun, 24 May 2009 22:01:35 +0000 Star http://www.spotmotorcycles.com/?p=747 AGV SP6 Leather Suit I always used to giggle at the guys on sport bikes wearing the mono-suit. Is it Ultra Man? If so, where are Godzilla, Mothra and Ghidorah? Now that I've identified myself as a consummate geek of a certain age, I'll also admit that as I've gotten older and ridden more miles through harsher weather -- and lived to tell about it -- I cast a wondering and slightly envious eye at the mono-suited boys (and girls, but not in this particular suit, as it is molded for men).

A one-piece riding suit solves the problems of coats slipping or sliding up your back as you pick up speed, losing body heat in harsh weather, and the always-fun bumblebee that somehow hitches a ride under your coat and walks leisurely up your back while you practically ride into a ditch trying to get stopped before you get stung.

The AGV SP6 one-piece leather suit is manufactured in premium 1.5mm cowhide leather. Quality is the name of the game, and it is double AND triple stitched in all the "owie" areas (elbows, knees, booty, etc.) where you are likely to have abrasion should you meet pavement. There are Kevlar stretch panels on the insides of arm and leg joints to increase comfort and mobility. The suit comes with full vents in the torso, arms and legs, which is good because you can't exactly take off half of it. It also has removable armor in the shoulders, elbows and knees. Make sure your suit fits you extremely well, because when you're wearing armor in a suit that doesn't fit, you feel like you have blocks of wood floating around randomly in your suit. Last but not least, this suit has reflective "badges" all over it, which is good because it's black. So if you ride a dark bike, have a dark helmet, and wear this suit, well, you're practically invisible.

This suit costs somewhere around $450. But so can a good coat, and when you put quality leather pants or chaps on top of that, you're likely to save money in the long run.

And it's from Alpinestars, so you know it'll perform (regardless of whether your name is Stella or Julie).

The suit is made of genuine 1.2-1.4mm full grain leather for top-notch abrasion resistance. Built in are several accordian stretch panels for a snug fit designed to conform to the curves of a woman's body.

The elbow and knee pads are CE-certified and feature injection molded shells with dual-density foam padding. The back protector is a removable foam pad that can be upgraded to a CE-rated one.

The seams are multi-stitched for tear-resistance, while the YKK zippers are the standard auto-locking variety.

All in all, it's a pretty good suit, but what if you're not Stella or Julie? We won't tell....
