Sure, these Gel Reflector gloves are made specifically to protect your hands from a motorcycle crash; otherwise, they wouldn't be very good for bike riding. They have little features like high impact absorption gel in the knuckles and back of the hand as well as extra padding on the palm. They're made out of a tough textile material that is abrasion resistant as well. They also have a handy wrist strap that helps you make a nice snug fit for any occasion.

If you're not down for the pink, you might not be down for these Olympia gloves, but they're a decent pair of gloves for the price. Okay, you can get them in other colors like blue and hi-viz, but why would you? Also, they come in sizes ranging from small to x-large.

Let's do some word association:

I'll say a word and you say the first thing that pops in your head. First word: "Road Rash" (you probably thought of "Ouch"). Second word: "Naked Leather" (maybe you thought of a shaved cow running through a busy mall?). Last word: "Protection" (perhaps an image of an army tank came into mind).

So what do we learn from this exercise? We learned that you guys have an over-active imagination, and that "naked leather" is a fun word to say even if it doesn't involve shaved cows.

The River Road Laredo Men's Cruiser Glove is designed for the motorcyclist on a budget. It's made out of genuine naked cowhide leather, which is leather that is generally smooth on one side and slightly rougher on the other. There's a gel pad located in the palm area that is designed to add extra protection in the event of an accident, but also to provide protection from shaken nerves on your hands on longer rides. Essentially, the gel absorbs some of the vibration from the handlebars to make your hands less shaky. The adjustable wrist strap is used to tighten the gloves on and keeps them in place. The Laredo gloves are available in X-Small up to 3XL.

If you've ever wanted to know what it would feel like to put one of your appendages in a meat grinder and watch as your skin peels off of the muscle in your palm, then try getting into a wreck on your motorcycle without wearing a pair of gloves. I've made that mistake once, and I can honestly say that picking gravel out of your hand for the weeks to follow is not a fun task. It seems like such a silly thing, though, having to put gloves on every time you go for a ride, but it only takes a split second for someone to pull out in front of you and cause you to go down, hand-first, on the asphalt.

So, enough of my ramblings on the safeness of the matter. Think about a pair of the Monsoon Classic Motorcycle Gloves made by Olympia if you're looking for an inexpensive solution for your hands. They're made out of treated leather and are 100% waterproof. They have good padding on the palms and the knuckles for that added little bit of protection. They can clip together like a pair of ski gloves to keep them from getting separated when you're not using them, and the strap around the wrist ensures that you've got a nice tight fit. Not the best gloves out on the market, but a great deal for something from Olympia.

It can be difficult sometimes to find a pair of gloves that not only don't look ridiculous, but also fit the way they're supposed to and don't pinch in uncomfortable places. I've worn a lot of gloves during my riding career, but my favorites are the ones that contain Kevlar. Not just because the material is tougher than bullets, but also because it seems to fit better than even some of the leather gloves out there.

These Kevlar Hard Knuckle Tactical Gloves manufactured by Rothco are designed for anything you can throw at them. Designed with a motorcyclist's mentality, these gloves will not only protect you in the event of a crash, but they are also reliable enough that they've been used by military personnel for other activities. Besides being composed mostly of Kevlar, there are other quality bits to it as well. The palm, fingers, and thumbs are protected with water-repellent goatskin leather. The Carbontek molded knuckles, which can absorb high impacts and protect the delicate skin on the top of your hand, are also covered with water-repellent goatskin leather. Kevlar protects everything else in the glove, but I don't think they're bullet-proof, so I wouldn't try to catch any rounds shot at you.

Raider Motorcycle Gloves, Black | Budget Mens Black Leather Bike or ATV Gauntlet

Have you ever ran down a track in high school and suddenly tripped over your own two feet to find yourself falling hands-first onto the semi-soft shredded rubber compound, only to pick yourself up and notice that your palms are bleeding? Well, if not, you're lucky. I know from experience that landing on pavement, asphalt, or even sometimes grass, can still leave your hands in bad shape. For this reason, I look at these gloves and wonder: "Really? Will these gloves really save my skin?"

These gloves offer little for the motorcyclists, except for being easy on the wallet. Look at what they advertise: "Made of premium materials." Well, that could mean a lot of things. "Designed to provide extra comfort." Sounds nice, but what does it mean -- it protects from the cold or rain? I'm not saying that the Raider Black motorcycle gloves aren't any good. I just have some serious doubts about anything safety-gear-wise that costs less than a meal from Red Robin.

The main thing that any rider, whether they are new to the game or well seasoned, should look for in a pair of gloves is: how do they protect? Do they have double stitching in the palms? Do they have gel protection in the knuckles? Do they provide insulation from the cold?

Of course your budget is going to come into play, and maybe the Raider gloves fit in that budget nicely. They're inexpensive, but somehow I think that that may be the only thing to like about them. Here are some gloves that I've ridden in that may be a little more money, but will provide a lot more protection.

Remember that pair of gloves you bought at the grocery store the other day because someone mentioned that you should wear hand protection when riding your motorcycle? I bet you didn't figure on your fingers cramping up and aching just from your quick 2-mile commute in the morning, even if it was cracking 40 degrees with the sun shining.

I understand that you don't want to pay much for gloves, but let's look at the reality of the situation. Your hands do 80% of the work on the bike. You can't accelerate without them, and you sure as hell can't brake quickly if your fingers have frozen to the grips when the bus driver swerves to miss the drunk transient who just threw his half-full can of Steel Reserve at him.

Joe Rocket Motorcycle Speedmaster Gloves 8.0 | Armored Black Leather & Carbon Fiber, Also In Red or Blue

Joe Rocket Speedmaster gloves have been around for quite a while. I see a lot to like about the latest incarnation, the Speedmaster 8.0. I guess 8.0 means that this is the 8th version -- I'm quick that way.

Anyway, here's what the glove has to offer. It has the standard drum-dyed leather construction as its base. What this glove has that some of the older Speedmasters didn't is a full compliment of armored inserts. It has injection-molded, vented knuckles. It also has molded reinforcements at the cuff (in carbon fiber) and at the fingers. Finally, it has armored plastic reinforcement in the palms. This is the only place that I have a potential gripe. The palms on these gloves may tend to get bulky. This is a conundrum on good motorcycling gloves. The palms must be protected, but often that protection can impede "feel".

I like the double cuff closure on the Speedmaster. This is a nice system. The Speedmaster gloves are available in sizes small through 2XL. Three color combinations are offered in black, blue, and red.

This is a good-looking, well-constructed sport glove from the Rocket people.

Alpinestars Mens Motorcycle Gloves, Drystar ST-1 | Waterproof Black Fleece Lined

I tried these gloves on several recent winter rides. OK, my winter rides in Arizona may not be like your winter rides in North Dakota. However, I tested these gloves at 65 miles per hour in sub-40 degree temps. The Alpinestars ST-1 Drystar Gloves kept my digits comfortable. I did not ride in wet weather, but rider reports are that they are adequately waterproof as well. Here are the details:

The gloves are constructed of 500 denier nylon outer shell, with a breathable and waterproof Drystar membrane. There is a fleece lining that is not too bulky. They have subtle and attractive embroidered logos.

Despite the "Clarino" reinforcements on palm and thumb, the protective potential of these gloves is limited by the materials. They will be better than nothing in a fall, but will not approach the protection of leather.

For me, the gloves were a more generous fit than other Alpinestars gloves I've tested. This is more than likely due to the fact that these are touring gloves rather than the race gloves I've worn before.

As a glove for cool (not bitter cold) and wet conditions, I think the Alpinestars ST-1 Drystars are a good choice. They are available in sizes small through 2XL.
