In the process of exploring, we took a "detour" through some tiny mountain towns. Suddenly, a friend got a flat on his Honda SuperHawk. There we were in the middle of nowhere (albeit a beautiful corner of nowhere), with darkness nearing. To make a long story short, he pulled out a plug kit and inflation CO2 cartridges. The repair was successful, and we safely made it to Taos before dark.

The MSR Tire Inflation Kit is a good option for the inflation of repaired tires. It includes a unique and ingenious L-shaped valve connection which requires no hoses. This adapter will work well in the tight spaces inherent in motorcycle rims. It also includes three CO2 cartridges and a carrying case.

You will notice I did not mention the repair kit included in this kit. That's because there isn't one. May kits include patches or plugs. However, I believe MSR feels that the repair kit will be specific to the bike on which the product will be used. Dirt riders will bring a patch kit or spare tube, while street riders will bring a radial tire plug kit.

The MSR kit is a good, compact tool. Just remember that it does not include the repair portion.

No matter what motorcycle style an exhaust will be fitted to, there are two common considerations. One is that they are expensive; the other is that left untreated, they will discolor over time.

Kreem Blue Shield is a product that will, if applied correctly, prevent pipe bluing by reducing internal heat. The product's application is fairly complicated because it is applied internally. I'm not here to give you product instructions. The company provides a detailed application procedure. However, you should be aware that the process involves sealing one side of the pipe with duct tape and pouring the product into the pipe twice. There is also a substantial curing time. The product is only for the header pipes, not the muffler, so if the muffler is a non-removable part of the total exhaust system, supreme care must be taken.

Users report that the product is very effective in fulfilling its intended purpose. It must be noted that Kreem Blue Shield is only for use in brand new pipes. It will be a waste of time to try to coat any pipe that has been run for any amount of time.

If you want your new pipe to stay silver and shiny, Kreem Blue Shield is a good starting point.

In short, I love the product. It comes with a variety of mounting options out of the box -- some of which are more secure than others.

Dirt bike mounting poses its own unique issues due to vibration, banging, tree branches, and the like. The GoPro Hero Motosport Handlebar Mount Kit may just be the ticket in these situations. It is a fast and secure mount for anything tubular from ¾" to 1.4". That is a fairly wide range of possibilities. Aside from the most logical home on the motorcycle's handlebar, the mount can hold to blinker stocks and tubular frames. It can also be mounted all over the place on your mountain bike.

Like the majority of the other GoPro mounts, the range of angles and positions is extremely wide. Thus, interesting camera positions and angles are possible.

The only nit to pick with the GoPro Hero Motosport Handlebar Mount Kit is that the mounting adjuster knob is a bit large and can impede mounting in some tight locations.

Overall, the mount is secure, adjustable, and easy to use. If you have a GoPro camera and a dirt bike or mountain bike, you now have a great mounting option.

It's not glamorous or exciting, but unless you ride a belt or shaft-driven motorcycle, it's a necessary evil. The simple fact is that modern chains and sprockets are expensive. They are also longer lasting than ever -- that is, if you pay them a little attention.

I have tried everything from high viscosity oil to chain wax. The truth is, most modern O-ring-friendly lubes will do the job. Unfortunately, most lubes end up spreading the joy everywhere -- on your swingarm, on your engine cases, on your tire sidewall, and even on your boots.

Bel-Ray Super Clean Chain Lube has its best feature right in its title. Basically, this lube is a heavy chain grease that sprays on white in color and sets up to prevent fly-off. It is the cleanest lube that I have found. It also seems to be an effective lubricant. I have used the stuff for thousands of miles and have noticed no undue chain wear. In fact, I have noticed increased miles between chain adjustments, which is a good sign.

The only potential complaint I can see with Bel-Ray Super Clean lube is the white color. Some riders love the look of their expensive gold chains. This lube will conceal that hue or other fancy chain colors.

With that fact in mind, smart riders carry some kind of option for fixing a flat. Some of the options include a spare tube and tire irons (for tube type tires), a plug kit and CO2 cartridges for tubeless tires, or some type of inflatable fix-a-flat. Threebond Seal 'N' Air is a product I have used for years. It is nice, cheap insurance that a flat will not leave you stranded.

Seal "n" Air is a good but non-permanent option. It works only on the most minor of leaks -- but with something more major, you shouldn't ride anyway. The key thing to remember is that this product is only intended to get you to where you can permanently fix the flat, or in the case of tubeless sport tires, replace the tire completely.

Here is a hint for you dirt and dual-sport riders. If you are going to carry the can in a pouch with other tools, wrap the Seal "n" Air in a thick sock. This will prevent the tools from rubbing a potential hole in the can, and it will serve as a cleanup rag if you have to use it.

To me, working on my motorcycles is almost as enjoyable, and therapeutic, as riding them. Here we have a factory Yamaha manual. To be honest, I have had factory manuals with which I was less than impressed. I often prefer aftermarket manuals like those made my Chilton, because they seem more geared to the common user.

However, I have had a Yamaha factory manual (for a YZF1000 that I used to own), and I was very impressed. The manual was thorough, complete, and useable. That usability factor is the key to a good manual. Some factory-produced manuals are too technical and too focused for use by factory-trained technicians. That is not what I found with my manual produced by Yamaha. Yes, it covered things that I would never do myself, but it was written to all skill levels.

This manual will include all the information needed for the full spectrum of repairs. Of course, it will cover basic maintenance such as oil changes and chain adjustments. However, it will also cover more advanced service information such as valve adjustments and even complete overhauls. Obviously, the user will have to decide what level of service he or she is capable of tackling. If you plan on working on your motorcycle, get a good manual. This Yamaha manual is a good one.
