Avon Speedmaster Classic Tire Camping last year, we pulled up next to a classic machine from the '50s. The owner, seeing a couple more bikes at this mostly-car event, came over to brag. Along with many impressive attributes, he said, "That's original rubber, too." Original rubber. Very old tires. He said this as if it were a good thing. I hope he survived the ride home.

Not even to mention the advances in technology over the past several decades, but I doubt tires could make it that long without dry rotting. You don't need to have actual classic tires to maintain a classic look. Avon's Speedmaster is specifically designed for the style and handling of classic bikes.

The benefits of modern compounds do not change the look of your old machine, but will extend the life of the tires. The ribbed tread pattern, which has otherwise fallen out of fashion, is still available on the Speedmaster. Some classic bikes are just for show, but if you plan to ride, the Speedmaster will run true up to 112 mph.

Avon has been making tires for over 100 years. This gives them more experience than most manufacturers, but it also means they were there when your classic bike rolled off the line as shiny and new as you've been spending your free time trying to make it.

A fair price is asked for Avon's Speedmaster, but you will have to keep in mind that these do handle like classic tires. If you've outfitted your old machine with modern tires and are switching to capture a truly authentic feel, be careful for a while to get used to that new feel.
