Alpinestars Stage Jacket Years ago as I walked out the front door on my way to learn how to ride, I was asked to make a promise: "Wear your leather jacket the whole time," he said out of concern for my well-being, and I agreed. I didn't think anything of it. A leather jacket was, I understood, standard personal protection gear. I neglected to note that I would be spending the next few days riding around on blacktop at low speeds in 90 degree weather -- roasty-toasty. After sweltering in my own personal sweat lodge, I finally got to ride away (legally) at speeds over 15 mph and cool off.

Alpinestars has been around the block, and they know what is required of different materials. Their Stage jacket is good, strong, thick leather. The hide construction will offer excellent abrasion resistance and, to prevent heat buildup, they've punched it full of holes. Perforation in the chest and sides will give you amazing airflow for a leather coat, and the thickness of the leather prevents the loss of structural integrity if you crash.

You won't be limited to warm weather riding with the removable liner. I wouldn't recommend this for seriously cold weather, but at least you won't be stranded if the evening cools more than you'd expected. The armor leaves something to be desired for impact protection, but it can be replaced with stronger material.

There are no two ways about it -- this is a great looking jacket. The stitched leather design tapers at at the waist, giving the rider an elongated, broad-shouldered look. The simple Alpinestars logo on the chest, neck, arms and back is small and not the least bit ostentatious. You can get the Stage in blue, black, or a really striking red.
