Often a motorcycle accessory originates for functionality, but it looks so good that it becomes an item of style. I've heard them called engine guards and crash bars, but more often than not they're on a bike because they add chrome and look great.
Yamaha's Big Bar guards are 1.25-inch tubing bent in a wide bow for a low, classic look. These are made for the '07 V Star 1300, which is a beefy machine, and these bars do a nice job of balancing the appearance of the bike.
Engine guards protect your bike in the unfortunate event that you dump it, or should it get knocked over by the natural forces of wind and punk kids. I have a transverse V-twin on my bike, so if it goes over it lands right on the cylinder head cover unless I have crash bars.
These bars can be your unlikely savior if you should encounter road hazards like a scrap of metal that's been kicked up by a car. While it may still hit you or your bike, there is some protection if it happens to be deflected by your guards, and this does happen. Engine guards are also a good place to attach other accessories, like extra lighting and highway pegs.
The Big Bar engine guards cost a pretty penny at around $180. The price is perfectly reasonable for a set of quality guards. Although they are designed for a purpose, the most likely reason you'll be buying engine guards is because they will add an undeniably classic, chrome look of mechanized power.
